Once dependent on the oil and gas industries, tourism officials now realize the potential of another great resource – the outdoors. The lower Mississippi Delta, rich in nutrients, habitat, fish and wildlife, may be one of the most prolific environs in the world. Anglers and hunters know it. And with boats, rods and reels, guns, decoys, pirogues, ice chests and tackle boxes, they arrive daily – seven days a week, 365 days a year. The offshore fishing is also world-class. With the nearby proximity of the Continental Shelf, extreme depths are found just a few miles off the mouth of the Mississippi River. Combine several hundred oil rigs and gas platforms, the influential force of the river, and the Gulf of Mexico, this part of the world is an offshore angler’s dream come true. Vast schools of tuna, wahoo, blue marlin, amberjack, red snapper, grouper and mahi mahi, call this area home.
