WHALE SHARK

(Rhincodon Typus)

Reaching sizes of over 50 feet in length and weighing in at over 3 tons, these gentle giants glide through the Gulf of Mexico filter feeding on plankton. Whale sharks are always a welcome companion of Louisiana fisherman for their graceful beauty and for their propensity for attracting an incredible assortment of marine life. A true creature of the deep, whale shark's rarely approach coastal waters.

The whale shark's body is uniformly light brown in color with stark white dots decorating it's back. From a boat, the fish will usually appear to move very slowly and display a prominent flat head and wide mouth. Anglers are encouraged to keep a respectful distance from whale sharks to avoid stressing these placid but powerful marine giants.
