Capt Redbone/Speculizer Charters

Metairie, LA USA

I went out yesterday to do some scouting after I dropped my daughter off at school. Using nothing but plastics "Speculizers" I FOund some good spots and some "vacant" spots. The last spot I stopped at was about 30 minutes before I had to be back at the dock. I was using the speculizer Pro-Series and it was a fish on each cast but it sometime took a minute or two before they hit the bait.

I've been telling people and posting about the following method to speed up the catch because you never know when they're going to move or stop biting.
I switched to one of my Old Bayside tandem replacement rigs which has a snap swivel so you can just snap it on the bottom of the bobber instead of cutting and retying.
Once I put the double on I was getting hit seconds after each cast hit the water.
The main benefit of the double rig isn't mainly to  catch 2 at a time (which I had on 2 of my casts), but the real benefit is to offer 2 shrimp instead of just one. This makes SUCH a big difference.
THink of it like this...Say you're site casting for reds. THen you see one red about 6 ft from the boat. That gets you excited right??? Well, what about when you see 2 reds right next to the boat. WOAH! YOu don't get twice as excited, you get WAY more excited than just seeing one!
That's the same outcome when you present a tandem rig instead of a single rig.

I know this sounds like a commercial but it's the truth. I fish almost constantly with the  Old Bayside Tandem Speculizer. I usually use the replacement rig since I have lots of single rigs and just snap it on. IT also works great if you leave the top shrimp artificial and live on the bottom(if you love using live bait).
The double presentation is unbelievable.

Ended up with a limit of trout and made it back to the dock in time.

I have openings Tomorrow(THurs 14th) and Friday if you want to catch enough fish to keep your freezer full for the winter.

Oh yeah, everybody takes home complimentary Speculizers for their next fishing trip with their buddies.

Attached is a pic of a bull red that was in the mix of a school of beautiful trout out of BSM. Gerald Patch's son Jonathan handled this brut like a pro.
I've been doing great on the Old Bayside's Speculizers and Replacement Speculizers. They've been giving me a triple edge.
Great for artificial but if you like using live bait, when you pull the rubber shrimp off the hook has a bit of weight on the shaft so when your shrimp jumps away from the chasing fish, it allows them to run but not get away. I've had a good bit of fish give up on some live shrimp that kept jumping away from them.
BUT...The rig(weights to shrimp/hook) unhooks from the cork so you can go from single to double rig.
BUT #2...you can put the replacement rig only, single or double without a cork and use it to give a fantastic presentation on the bottom. I find twitching with a slow retrieve puts them in the boat. Also when you're fishing on bottom the tandem works best because it's 2 shrimp tempting them and you can put on 2 colors to see which they want. They're made so the rig makes it easy to work by simply twitching your rod tip while it's along the bottom.
Oh yeah, you can also cheat by putting a live shrimp/minnow on the bottom hook and leaving the artificial on the top hook and get 2 at a time more often. That works as a bottom rig or under a cork.

I brought a 2 man charter(Steve and Neil I appoligize out for not writing down your last names) for BigFIsh Charters yesterday(Mon) and it was one stop shopping in the Sound.
It's also a treat when you have experienced fishermen as I did.
We managed to Limit Out on Trout and make it back to the dock before the heat could catch up to us.

The fishing is at the level that made Louisiana famous. Try to put a day aside and call BigFish Charters at 504-610-6914.

When I was at Capt Ahab's house this morning getting ready to drive to BSM to film the Frank DAvis show there were trees bending in 30mph winds.I told Ahab,"Man I wish Frank would call and cancel"...Man was I glad he didn't! Oh, by the way, Frank doesn't cancel unless there's a danger factor. I"ll give you more on that later.

Anyway, we started at the little cut 30 seconds from the marina. Water was dirty. Frank and Ahab had Speculizers and ironically, I had live bait because it was really nasty this morning. Frank sees breaking bait fish and bam! brings in a big ole trout.
Fished it a little while then we go towards lake Robin. We stop a couple of times in dirty water to no avail. We stop at one of my favorite windy spots the deep cut between robin and coquille. We fished that for a while. Caught specs here and there towards the top and although I thought we'd catch  mix of convicts and trout on the bottom, it produced hard heads and gaf tops. But now and then we'd catch trout on the Lizers. Then in a distance was the corner of coquille and what's like a cove with calm clean water! Then we started picking up a few more. Moved to a small cut on the lee side down the north shore of coquille and it started getting more productive. Surprisingly I thought we'd give up size staying inside but that' wasn't the case. Beautiful trout. Trolled the shoreline and it produced more. We had found good water and it paid off.
Had a great day and to think I wanted to wimp out

Oh yeah, I think we may have caught only 1 fish on live bait. The rest were caught on Speculizers. Frank had the original, Ahab had the Pro series and I was using the new Old Bayside Speculizers. All 3 kicked butt in these lousy conditions.

Fished the Biloxi Marsh today trying one of the New Old Bayside Speculizer Replacement Rigs. The water was super low so I had I burned about a gallon of gas fishing just into the marsh off of st milo or what you could call the entrance of the Magnolia area. I parked where I had the drop off (appx 10 ft of water)right next to the boat, then a long cast away I had the water moving very fast with the falling tide at about 4ft deep. I didn't start fishiing until about 9am. I found the fish in both spots, the deep and the moving water(actually the deep spot was moving too). I was catching 2 out of 3 throwbacks which I expected(not hoped for) this time of year in this area. Since it was slow in the begining I put a BSM live shrimp under a cork to get them sped up a bit. Then grabbed the New Lizer and went to work. When it would slow down, I'd try deep on the bottom but usually the convicts were there waiting so I"d use live crickets again for a few casts outward in the rip at 4' depth and then back to speculizing. I moved a bit looking for bigger fish but I was loving this lazy day and went back to the Magnolia entrance where I was and finished off the day.

I also wanted to run my boat because it was missing out since Katrina but Capt Barry at BSM said many boats had the same problem and the rumor/diagnosis is some water in the gas from Katrina(don't ask me how). I topped off 30 gals with premium before launching and by the end of the day it was much better.

If you like new lures that work great. I mean "Off The Charts" Great, I"ll give some details in the forum about the new Old Bayside Speculizers and replacement rigs. Not to mention the best popping cork I"ve ever used.

Also if you want more details of where I was fishing shoot me an email. What makes this a good spot is that there are hundreds of spots that aren't accessible in super low tides and today was about as low as it'll get. But you have to be a bit patient to find them and when you do have the triple threat waiting for them. On the bottom, under a cork(speculizer deep), and deep under a cork(6 to 9 ft). Bring 3 rigs so you don't have to keep re-tying.

Perfect weather and what's even better is you don't have to leave the dock before daybreak this time of year.
Took Barnacle Bill, his daughter Karen, her son Jeff, and The Postmaster(Ray) to the Louisiana Marsh(used to be Biloxi marsh) for a great day of fishing. Poked around for the first 2 hours and picked out a few specs and about a dozen heads then it was time to get busy. doubles, triples, and quads. Perfect weather. Fish flying all over the boat. Laughs all day. Life couldn't get any better.
wound up with our limit of trout. As usual with Barnacle Bill's group, his grandson Jeff caught the most.

This was my 2nd to last trip before I take a one year haiatus from chartering. As much as it kills me I was given an offer I can't refuse--working on the enormous task of cleaning up after hurricane Katrina in what is STILL the best place to fish in the world, St Bernard.

Capt Barry said he'll give me till April before I give in...I didn't argue*L*

Friday and Saturday SE Louisiana doing what it does best...Showing out of towners why it's the Sportsman's Paradise.

Fishing for the King on Friday I had an awesome crew with some excellent fishermen that wanted nothing to do with small fish or coming back to the dock once the trip was started.
So Rain Sleet or Heat it was back to my pending Hot Spot in Eloi. Once we had them biting it was fish after fish after fish. Now, these guys are familiar with Florida's 15" trout minimum size so they were thowing back 13 to 14" trout. I told them "man what are ya'll doing???
12 inches long is big enough to keep." Well, they started keeping more fish and although I told them I"d measure any questionable size, they would still sneak 13 and 14" fish back in the water. So I promised them when we got to 75 fish we'd go outward for some Mule Trout and hopefully some Big Bull Reds. Well, when we got to 50 plus the dozen keepers that they thew back it was to Central in the dead calm seas. We started catching typical Central lady fish and although not many, Big Trout as ordered. Mr Bull Red also joined the excursion.  A few times in fact. Coincidently Bryant was the fisherman that was pushing to catch a bull red and he caught 2 in a row out there. Made another stop or two for more ladyfish, sharks, cats, Mule trout and Bull reds. By this time it was near noon with high tide so we took a long ride most of the way back in for some shallow water redfish. We rerigged with Original Speculizers(because you can simply slip the artificial shrimp off and put on live bait) with with Campos big live shrimp in hope the water wouldn't be too hot to have redfish in these ponds. We had lots of smallies(trout and rat reds) that would keep us busy while we looked for keeper redfish. To our delight each time we found one it was 8# to 11#'s. We'd only catch a red every 20 minutes or so but the trout and rat reds gave us plenty of fun while searching for them.

Like I said, they were season'd fishermen so they were working the trolling motor bringing us way back into  these ponds. Specs, reds, black drum kept us busy and we fished the day off with a text book ending. It was approaching 3pm and we were wrapping it up as we spooked a 10# redfish. We casted a jerkbait in front of the wake and in classic fashion he nailed it and the fight was on. Under the boat, the line got caught in the transducer but we loosened the drag in time to keep it from breaking before we unhooked the line and back to fighting. We boated our 5th Big Redfish and although it wasn't many each one was an amazing fight with lots of constant catching in between for a well worth venture into LA marsh which does it's own bragging as it lures out-of-towners to book another trip down here in the near future before they even leave from this one.
Saturday was similar to the FRiday trip above but with no reds and more Mule Trout instead.
To have your own Mule trout or Big Redfish trip call FISHING WITH THE KING at 888-704-3474 . YOu can ask for me, Capt Redbone to be your captain but be assured that The King or Capt Rory can get the job done in just as exciting fashion.

BSM, LA USA

Late report from last THursday. I've been in shell bch-Hopedale the last few days and haven't had a chance to post some great fishing trips.

THursday fishing for BigFish  Charters I had Yogi and his buds out for some specs and reds. Went to Lil Central to one of my cement rigs and started pulling up trout after trout. As we were catching they were moving slightly so we made some mini moves to stay with them.

TIP + When you're on a spec bite and it slows/stops without any evident reason, they're usually moving. Just be as quite as you can and move a bit where you think they would have went to. In this case it was about 20 to 30 yds further in the same direction we were casting.
We did that twice and stayed with them. Also try a different rigging before you move. If you're in deepwater(10' or more) try slipping a cork on in case they moved upward in the water column. We would have had our 3 man limit but we ran out of shrimp and had croakers only. They didn't want anything to do with the croakers.
We went to the marsh and tried for some reds with the croakers to no avail. So when we went back to the marina and the other boat with the rest of their entourage wasn't back yet, we bought 50 more shrimp and went to a hot spot very close to the marina for redfish. The water was moving really well and the specs were mixed in. Lots of smallies but when I'm redfishing like that I love to have even small specs to keep everybody busy while searching for reds.
We trolled up on a big school of "redbones" and when they spooked to the left we casted in front of them and it was  bam...bam...bam... on like donkey kong! One line busts...POW... The other wraps around the trolling motor but before the drag could get loosened so it could just take line while we fixed the problem, POW...it busted. Red number 3 busted off and there we were with hearts pounding from the excitement looking at a handful of corks floating by themselved out in the pond with the redfish gone. WOW

Although we lost them "It's better to have hooked and have lost then to never have hooked at all"

To have this excitement thrust upon you call BigFish Charters NOW at 504-610-6914 before it starts to cool off and things change. Oh Yeah, you can ask for Redbone as your captain but it's not neccessary. ALL of bigfish's captains are season'd pros and lots of fun to fish with.

No mules this time. One of the things I've found lately is the big trout aren't at all the what would be hot spots. When you find them you can usually get on a razoo but you may get nada at several of the other places. That was the way things started. After a few places we stopped at a rig and found a school of reds. From 3#s to 25#'s. We boated a 3# and 8# red and had the big bulls outsmart us by going to the rig pilings and turning to put our line against the barnacles. This happened 3 times in a row and at this time my customer said he didn't want reds, he wanted trout. So we moved. The next 2 stops were troutless and the reason being the tide had completely stopped. Well, being late morning and no tide spells "to the marsh". Tide or no tide you can usually catch lots of schoolies. Sure enough we found schoolies. Keeping about 1/2 of what we were catching, after about 40 minutes we moved to another place in the marsh hoping for some slightly bigger trout and perhaps some reds mixed in. Went to my new  honey hole and it was exactly as I'd hoped. Every cast was a fish of 60% keepers but constant and I mean constant action. There's always some reds in here and a big 9#'r showed up. It was great seeing this nice lady fight this big red. By now the fish were surrounding the boat. No matter which way you'd cast you'd catch a fish. At 2pm we came in.
Even though it was an off day in breton sound standards, it was good enough to brag about how good the fishing is in our state.

If you'd like to get on some great fishing action I have some weekdays open. 504-319-4446

With the fishing being fantastic in the SOund lately, while I was on my way to the Breton Sound Marina I was watching a light show in every direction. We launched and hoped it would move on as it usually does as the sun comes up but not today. We started dowon MRGO stopping nearby the launch for 10 minutes of redfishing but it never did clear up. We were back at the launch not long after. We waited a while with other fishermen but the rain persisted all morning long.

Here's a picture of Jeff holding one of the many hogs that made yesterday's 4 man limit.

Mules...Hogs...Sows...anyway you say it  it means Big Trout! Lots of them. Had the pleasure of taking one of rodnreel's good friends Barnical Bill with his daughter Karen, his Grandson Jeff and Ray a/k/a/ The Postman! It was katy bar the door as triples and quadrups were flying in the boat. One of the best parts of the trip was to see his grandson not only catching the most fish, but when the net wasn't waiting for him he didn't wait. He was swinging 4# trout over the gunnel. Unbelievable. Good job Jeff, I've been telling my captain friends about you.

If you like catching big trout you may only have a few more weeks left to do it like this. I have a few days open at 504-319-4446

WHAM BAM SPECKLED SLAM!!!
2 stop shop today. had our 4 man limit of specs just after 10am. But I have to give credit to my fishermen. We were at 75 fish and ran out of shrimp. They put on plastic and finished off their limit with style. On the bottom in 18' of water with a strong tide.  Not an easy task. So Jacob, John, Pat and Brandon, a Big Thanx for some great angling and making me look good.

get a hold of Bigfish Charters at 504-610-6914 and see how it feels to catch mules on every cast!

What a great week it's been working with Big Fish Charters! The last 2 days were similar to Mon and Tues. Big Trout and lots of them. WE're catching Mules every day out in the Sound. I mean mules coming in with doubles and sometimes triples. So far each day I've had someone on the boat that broke their personal Big Trout Record. Every single day! Unfortunately a few weeks ago I lost my camera and when I found it in my boat the saltwater ate it up. I'll be posting pics as they're sent to me by customers until I spring for a new one.
Monday and today I was using nothing but a Speculizer in 18' of water and catching 4 pounders on every cast at some while my customers were using live bait. I'm tempted to try the speculizer-II Tandem rig but if 2 of these monsters hook up it'll probably rip the rig apart. Although that doesn't sound like a bad thing eh?Today the bite didn't start until about 9am and we did best with Speculizers or speculizer rigs with live bait. Both croakers and shrimp are both catching mules.
Yesterday we caught fish early but the best part of the day was also after 9am again.
I"ve been fortunate to fish with some really good fishermen/fisherwomen lately.

Forgive me if this sounds like a commercial but with my fishmaster in the shop BECAUSE OF THE SUZUKI LEMON that's on it, I've been using Big FIsh Charters' Hydro Sport boat. The next boat I get will be a Hydro Sport. both yesterday and today there were some fairly rough seas in the sound and this boat planes along the top of the waves and is stable and smooth. Tons of fishing room. it's the kind of boat that makes you excited to use.

TO get on this awesome Mule SPec action and to do it in one of these Hydro Sports call Big Fish at 504 610-6914

port Sulphur, LA USA

launched out of High Ridge Marina in Port Sulphur today with one of my best Speculizer Customers, Superior Bait and Tackle on Siegen lane in Baton Rouge. Barataria bay has been putting out tons and tons of speckled trout so today should be no different than any other day right??Wrong...Chocolate milk everywhere. The shrimpers were kicking up the mud and the winds were making sure it was spread around. but the water was fine at Gr Ecaille inward, and even better in the ponds. Caught specs on every cast between gr ecaille and freeport canal with lots of throwbacks mixed in. Mark Mathews(the owner of Superior bait and tackle) had asked me to put his son Chase(9 yrs old) on some drag pulling fish so we left the schoolies for redfish. 4 corners had lots of reds. The only problem we had today was one of the fishermen on the boat was handling these reds like he was fishing for the first time. I lost 3 in a row! Fortunately Chase, his Dad and Grandads knew how to land fish and made up my faux pas. I had a great time fishing with the 3 generations.

The specs are biting everywhere. Buras, port sulphur, lafitte, shell bch, breton sound. Just to name a few.

3 day report...
Fished in Lafitte with my 2 of my favorite people, Capt Phil Robichaux and Capt James Wilson on Fri and Sat. What a great 2 days.
Friday, it was FISH ON from the start at what must be the most popular spot in Lafitte right now, manila Village. It was as if we had reserved a spot right between the 2 islands among countless boats. My customers caught and caught and even liked it when the bite slowed so they could take a snack break and talk about all the fish(8:00am). Then we moved and caught some at the next couple of spots. We found some along the bank by Bassa Bassa that had a mix of reds and specs. To me that's an early Xmas present when I find a spot with both reds and specs.
One of the perks in this business is that sometimes, you get to fish with such good people and have so much fun, that you almost feel awkward because you're getting paid to do it.
I sure hope to see these guys again.

Saturday, it was FISH ON at the first stop but there was no tide movement so I knew we'd be moving soon. We hopped a couple of places picking up a few while the tide was picking up. I really enjoy working for Phil Robichaux and his captains because they work together as a finely tuned team. I got a call from capt James Wilson a couple of times inviting me where he was catching one after another after another(his crew and mine were one group). I took him up on one of his calls. To me, it's more fun to have a couple of boats catching by each other, yelling back and forth giving the other boat a hard ribbing like good friends do.
When the bite slowed there we hit a place just off of barataria waterway and it was "katy bar the door". There were throwbacks mixed in but there were some really nice trout coming over the gunnel too. Finished the day with an imposssible amount of fish to count including the throwbacks. The big bet among the 2 boats was to be the biggest redfish. We went for reds an hour before the trip's end and after 3 minutes of fishing, "BAM" an 8 lb red hit the line. We thought we had the big dog but Capt James' boat got us by less than a pound. On just my boat alone the Speculizer must have gone under 300 times over both Fri and Sat

Sunday, it was back to Breton SOund Marina for me. Although it was windy we were able to get into ELoi and caught Big Trout at the first rig we went to. Capt Barry of BigFish.net gave this spot to me and you know what rule number one is eh? "When you find a spot you can give it to anyone and everyone. But if someone else gives you a spot the only way you should share it with others is if they're with you when you go fish there" Capt Barry was at that rig when I got there but being the generous gentleman his is, he waved us towards him to get to the hot spot. AS the bites slowed, we started rig hopping while
the winds got stronger and stronger. We took a bath going from there into the marsh south of MRGO. AFter lunch 11:00am we went to some protected water to try for some redfish. Hooked a good one and it got off.  The winds were so strong all we could do is sit, cast and wait and most banks were dirty so it was back to BSM to clean the day's catch.

The fishing is by far the best it's been all year so give your favorite captains a call and get in the Big Fish Fun

another exciting day out of BSM. Took Dr Eric and Dr Travis to the edges of black bay and a couple of islands before the winds picked up which was around 9 or 10am.

Dr Travis's Top Secret "Never Fail" lure lived up to it's name keeping up with the speculizer.
we started catching beautiful specs at the first stop in the pockets along the north west part of black bay and we caught at just about each place we stopped with only 1 or maybe 2 exceptions.

At 10 am we stopped at one of the islands and caught more nice specs with some redfish. IT seems whenever you're on a school of specs and you hook on to a red, it's a BigUn.

This was a good trip and will only get better each day from now on.

If you'd like to get in on a Black Bay adventure please call me at 504-319-4446.
We'll locate them with Lizers or your favorite baits and then hit them with Topwaters for the best action a fisherman can ask for.
If you're not experienced with Top Water fishing, BE SURE to call me because I'll show you how easy it is.
Plus, this time of year you may break your personal Big Spec Record!

I'll supply the Speculizers, Top Waters, or what ever your favorite bait might be. Including live if requested.

Thanx,

Took some the guys from Farris Bros along with some other boats with THeBigFish to the Biloxi marsh to fish from about 2pm to 4:30. The Tide was slack for the most part then coming in a bit. The fishing, or should I say catching from the morning compared with this afternoon was a big difference.

We're getting spoiled because 2dz trout and 8 reds not including throwbacks of reds and trout would be decent for 2-1/2 hours of fishing. But the way things have been it felt slow. The guys on the boat tought I was crazy because I complained of the evening's catch.

I'll be out there tomorrow morning along with the strong falling tide which has produced so many fish lately. The fishing is so much fun right now, come aboard, 504-319-4446 great rates.

Worked on our Lodge in Venice Sat and SUn. Ran out to catch a few that evening at 3:00 and got to the spot at 3:30.
Caught 23 fish in that hour but had lots of turns and cuts to go thru to get back so as much as I hated to leave, it was either that or stay the nite.
I'm going there tomorrow and have an opening in the charter if someone would like to book a single spot. The fish should be biting like crazy as usual.

Cold front and 30 mph winds! We'll have that about every 4 days for a while eh? That's too often to stay home every time it happens so off we went with a 2 man charter. My face felt like it was begining to feeze on the way to the Biloxi marsh. As usual, when the front first comes thru, I'll have live bait.
WOund up with lots of specs, some reds, and some Jimmy Carters. 55 fish in all.

Considering the weather was ridiculous
for fishing, I can't complain.
This is the easiest time of the year for catching specs. If you want to get on a major spec bite, from now till early Jan is the time. Call Capt Redbone at 504-319-4446 great rates.

Walked outside this morning and the neighborhood trees were swaying like crazy. I was going to call and cancel my charter with Pat Dehon and his boys but we had rescheduled this charter 3 times so it was do or die.

These guys were troopers. They kept casting  and casting while the rain poured for about an hour. The winds were non stop and tangled the lines a couple of times. My theory on tangled lines is...If it looks like it'll take more than a minute or two to untangle, cut and retie.

The Biloxi marsh gave us 80 trout and a couple of Heads. Campos live bait was the ticket. We had doubles and triples.

For some extreme spec fishing at great rates call me at 504-319-4446 Thanx, Capt Redbone

Went to Venice in search of big fish and they were there. All the bull reds you could ever want. While fishing for the bulls we noticed an enormous flock of birds diving and moving fast as they were diving. Spanish Mackeral. man what a blast. Spanish Mackeral on Speculizers and rattle traps. They'd hit the baits so fast and the water was clear so you could see them as they were hitting it.
We left the mackeral biting for a bit more bull red action. After more of that, we left the bull reds biting to get some meat in the box. Got on a school of black drum and some reds mixed in.

Guys and gals, if ya'll want to get on enough Big Fish action to make you say uncle... don't wait too long.

Yesterday out of Buras I had a couple from Kansas that couldn't believe that we were catching Reds, Drum, sheepshead, flounder and some cats all out of the same spot. About 50 fish in all. They're already talking about rescheduling.

Today, I had the priviledge of working for Big Fish Barry and Ct. We caught fish all day totaling 70 keeper trout plus a few assorteds(reds, sheepshead, etc). The guys were a blast but it hurts my heart to tell you that NO trout were caught on Speculizers. They were caught about 5 to 6 ft under a cork on Live shrimp

Fished for my good friend Capt Bobby Bryan on Sat. Went in the Timbaliers for big reds early. Caught a couple but the catfish were doing the dominating. We went to the nearby rigs and guess what? Bigger catfish. Including big ole gaftops. So into the marsh we went.
Got on specs and then white trout. We caught white trout for hours. If they missed your bait, just pop it again and they will come.

I found the answer to the question, "Do old lures stop working?"
"No"
One of my guests  was catching 2 at a time on the old shad rig while I was catching 2 at a time on the new speculizer-II tandem.
All others were caught on Pro-S and Originals.

Woke up this morning down in Buras planning to fish and was met by an American flag standing straight out. I was to fish with 2 Buds of mine. We thought about canceling but how else are you going to get to say things like, "Man the water was chocolate milk!", or, "10 to 15mph my butt!"

So we went and caught pretty much exactly what we thought we would. A  handful of nice trout and a few Big Reds. I've been catching bulls pretty much every day I've fished over the last 2 weeks down in Buras.
At least it's south winds to bring some water up. I hate to have really low water.

All specs were speculized.

Went to Buras with a 2 man charter, Mike and Doug(sorry guys, I don't have your last names) and they caught their limit of specs and a Big Bull Red to boot.
The fishing is great this fall so far.
With an occasional exception. I had 2 people in the Biloxi marsh yesterday and caught right at 30 keeping only 20. But with that first cold front I didn't expect even that.

To get on some of this great fishing call me at 504-319-4446. Since it's the begining of fall/winter,

Big Reds have been fantastic on every trip this past 7 days. Buras, Venice, Biloxi Marsh.
If it's been a while since you've had Big, and I mean BIG reds try to rip your rodnreel out of your hands, get in touch with me and we'll take care of that.
Beaches, Rocks, and marsh. East side or West side. You take your pic.
Or if you have a boat, I'll put you on them and you can come back for the next 2 months and wear out some gear.

Hal and Sue Ray, and Mike Macaluso came out for their 2nd day in Buras to Empire today and it was another day of big fish fighting. The reds were the biggest but we caught more black drum than anything except trout. These Missippians are good fishermen so my job was easy these last 2 days.
We'd get on specs for short durations and at one point caught 2 at a time (see pic) on the new speculizer-II tandem rig. Thisis an amazing rig. If you try one and don't like it's results, I'll replace it with either an original or pro-Series. We also  caught on the Lizer Pro-Series and jigs.
Since there was a lack of tide both yesterday and today we tipped the jigs and an occassional Lizer with stick crickets and it paid off big time.

Great rates and a guaranteed good trip or it's on me.

Took some damn good fishemen/fisherwoman Hal Ray, Sue Ray, and Mike Macaluso from MS for another day of BIG REDS. Buras is producing bull reds like crazy. Also several of 26" on down. PLenty of specs(cast after cast most of the time you find them)
Also a few extras like drum, flounder, spanish mackeral, and of course, no body of water would be complete without......Catfish!

These are the most aggressive catfish I've ever seen. They hit plastic. Time after time. I guess there's lots of competition for food out there.

Come get in on the action. It's so much darn fun. Plus it'll only get better after we get a few cold fronts.

It's good to be back. The only time I've fished since the hurricane was for last weeks redfish tournament. So today's scouting trip was not only a great catching trip, but it felt great to be back on the water catching what I like best, BIG REDS and lots of specs!
I took my friends Rusty, and Jonathan to Buras to do some scouting. These guys are excellent fishermen so if there are fish in the area, they should find them.
We picked out fish here and there from the start, but when we found them...boy did we find them. We were catching 26 to 36" reds on just about every cast on Speculizers. Well, 90% of them anyway. The good thing about catching them on speculizers, is you can catch specs along with them in most cases. Well, today for some reason, we caught about a dozen big fat hard head catfish in 8'of water on speculizers. Go figure?

We left them biting and went hunting for specs. It was every cast for 30 to 40 mins.  Made it back to Joshua's for lunchtime.

So, it was to the ponds for redfish this morning taking Frank and Eric's advise from last nite's segment.
Well, there were redfish tailing all over. It was awesome. There were a couple of times when I would be watching one tailing, then look down and see one swimming under the boat. My shadow was also working against me because some were way off the bank.

Caught a limit on jerkbaits and red rippers and came home.

Holy Mackeral! I mean Holy Speckled Trout! I don't know where to start.

First...last week Endura lures sent me a box of a new color shrimp for the Speculizer Pro-Series. It's the best looking Chartreuse shrimp I"ve ever seen. I mean beautiful. I used it at my first stop today and the specs love it. I was catching 2-1/2# trout on 2 out of 3 casts.

Another boat with 3 people were across from me. One of them was casting right next to my cork and couldn't get a bite. Unfortunately they must have thought that if they casted from another angle it would make a difference because they trolled just one boat length away from the entire area I was catching fish in. THE ENTIRE AREA!!! They made a complete semi circle along the edge of the entire area holding fish. After that they caught one fish. I caught 2 more and that was that. They seemed to try not to spook the fish but when someone's catching fish after fish. PLease don't disturb the area. If they would have had speculizers they would have been catching too. That's why I was catching so many. Then they tied up where I was casting 8 casts earlier. My lure would have gone in their boat. I guess if they're not catching no one else should eh?

Sorry about the moaning.  back to biz...

I was running away from some storms, catching here and there when I saw a giant flock of birds sitting and diving. As soon as I had a takedown I eased the anchor in and it was Katy Bar the Door! I was testing some new colors on the speculizer-II tandem and every cast was 2 at a time. The only time it was one was when one of the fish got off the hook on it's way to the boat or while swinging it over the gunnel.
Now, I don't want to mislead ya'll. 90% were throwbacks but 2 at a time was a lot of fun. The storms started getting close so I had to leave them biting 2 at a time. I'm glad they weren't keepers because I may have pushed my luck a bit with the storms.

There's one more incoming tide tomorrow. Then it'll be a week before it comes around again. That just means it could change things a bit. I find an incoming tide that peaks from 8am to noon makes things pretty predictable on the west side of the river.

What a great time the last few days.

Started off with Steve McNemar and his Dad fishing the Buras area. The fishing was off a bit but we picked out some specs and a  couple of big bull reds on the speculizer pro-series and what might be the next new speculizer rig.  I won't sell it unless it catches enough fish to bear the speculizer name. It's still in the testing mode but if it repeatedly works like it did THursday, hold on to your hats.
By the way, if you want to get into the excitement of using what could be the Gulf Coast's next hottest lure and have some "say so" on how it's going to be made, please call 504-319-4446 or email me to book a trip.

Then part 2 of the Thursday double header! Capt Barry of the Big Fish fishing show met me at the dock at 1:30 and we went back for more. The speculizer pro-series did it's job. What a great show and what a great day on the water. There's something about an evening trip when that sun hits the horizon as you're catching the best bite of the day. Damn it's hard to make that last cast!
Guys if you're not on the water early on any Saturday, be sure to tune in to Big Fish fishing show at 6 am on channel 7, WDSU (is that the right call letters  Barry??) It truly is the best next thing to being there. Especially if you do like I do as I get my reels and while I"m watching the show, I'm either cleaning my reels, changing line, or something to that effect.

Friday me and my charter started out of the Ostrica locks on the east side of Buras  for bull reds.
Using the new Pro-Series lure it didn't take long till some of the most exciting inshore fishing LA has to offer was on. the first bull was caught on braided line and he was towing us a while. After some additional bull catching the wind was up and so were the white caps.. We pulled out and headed to the west side out of Joshua's for more speculizing but this time for trout. The YCB area had the water of choice  as it usually does with a strong NE wind.

What an amazing 2 days!
Thursday, fished with Capt CT and Capt Barry under the guidance of Capt Greg filming a show of Big Fish down in Buras. Not to be redundant, since Capt CT posted below I'll spare the details but it was so much fun at the lodge and fishing with CT and Barry, it's easy to see why their show is such a success. Also caught another bull red on the speculizer which has unexpectedly become what is probably the best shallow water bull red lure on the market.

Thursday nite, after an invitation from The Redneck Adventures fishing show in MS, I went Bow Fishing with them guided by Capt Darrel Bryan of Marshmasters...Well, I don't know if I have the words to describe the extreme adventure of going thru the marsh all lit up at nite, then bow fishing for reds. Baitfish jumping everywhere and even better, it gives you a close underwater look at how the fish are staged and will help in your choices when redfishing during the day. It is NOT like shooting fish in a barrel like some people would like you to believe, but definitly is one of the most exciting things I've ever done.

Friday, went to the close rigs straight out of Bridgeside marina on Gr Isle. Again with my friends at Redneck Adventures. We caught the biggest bull reds I ever have and as many as we wanted. Pulling them up in 40+ft of water adds to the fight. Also caught some mangroves.

Now I don't know what to do because  those 3 trips in 2 days will be a hard act to follow.

Headed to West Pointe a la Hache yesterday with Bill Healy for some fall speck fishing.  We decided not to duck hunt with all of the heat.  That turned out to be a good decision after talking to other hunters.  We ended the morning with 33 keeper trout, with plenty of throw backs, and one redfish.  The specks were caught in interior bays on the Speckulizer.  The reds were present, but very skiddish.  All in all a good day.  Bill and I will be out on Saturday for a quick morning hunt. Hopefully the front will bring in a few birds.

I wanted to say a special thanks to David Kloete of Anvil Iron Works, and Hank and Andy Johnson of the Boat Doctor.  This was my first trip in my boat since my rig was rear ended on the opening day of teal season.  As usual, David did a great job welding and The Boat Doctor took care of the rest.

Been off line for a long while and man it's good to be back to talk fishing!
Fished Pt Sulphur twice last week. There's lots of specs around. Sanbois has them on every cast but you're gonna have to throw 90% of them back to get bigger. But bay lanaix(sp?) has bigger ones. I thought the reds would be thicker in the ponds but they were spread out in the ones I was in.
I used the New Speculizer Tandem rig in lanaix and it worked great. They're not in the stores yet but will be soon. By the way, it's not 2 DOA shrimp. I tried that but the 2nd shrimp was too much weight on the leader and killed the action. Should have a hopedale report tomorrow.

I first heard about Milton's death Thursday nite from Rick"Team Psycho" at Mac Attack's trailer in Gr Isle.

Capt Milton Balser was corresponding with me for over a year before I met him.
He was telling stories about his catches with my speculizer thru magazines, and word of mouth, internet way before I had met  him. That's how we became friends. We spoke over the phone several times trying to get a fishing trip together and he would  make me feel great with repeated fishing stories of times he had with my lure. We also had some mutual friends that would come up in our conversations. I loved the way he would give me some very confidential fishing spots(during the worst months of winter and we still hadn't met.
YOu could tell how much he loved fishing. When I finally met him about 10 days ago, it started to rain a bit but we stood there steadily talking about fishing and other fishing folks we both knew and we traded fishing secrets and so on.
For me to get so much out of such a short relationship with Milton, I can only imagine how much presence he had on other peoples lives that he was close to.

I"m so sorry to Milton's family for such an enormous loss.

Yesterday me and Capt Brian Leblanc fished with Lafayettes Fishing Icon, Larry Cupper from Good Morning Acadiana, and his wife(whom, by the way is a darn good fisher-person).
Anyway, it was windy and a bit rough as went out of Port Sulphur and I learned a valuable lesson. When it's windy and you're going into big water,(or even if it's a small open bay), get your anchor ready to put out before you get to your first cast. We caught 2 beautiful specs right off the bat. The wind was blowing, the anchor was stored away, so we just kept trolling and drifting around silently assuming they would be all around if they're at these first 2 casts. We kept moving and casting but were no longer catching. So we tried to motor back to that exact same spot we first stopped and caught but had trolled all around the area. We either ran through them and made them scatter, or lost the exact spot or something to that effect.
We then moved to a small island and caught some throwbacks. Went to the bch at 4 bayou pass and caught some more but it wasn't what you'd expect from the beaches this time of year.
The problems were that the tide wasn't moving and the water was filthy. But I believe if it was a good, moving tide they would have been thick enough to catch a pretty good mess of them.

Anyway, we had fun and caught a few fish, but I won't take that lesson I mentioned lightly the next time I'm fishing and it's windy/rough. If I would have slipped the anchor in on that 1st or 2nd fish we may have had a fabulous day of catching.

Damn, you've gotta love this sport!!!

Sat morning went to 4 bayou pass out of high ridge. It was the first time I went there from high ridge and it was an easy route.
WE stopped along the way there for a couple of big specs and a bull red that's still swimming with a brand new speculizer in his mouth. He turned at a piling and that was it.

Got to the beach at 4 bayou pass, found a parking spot and caught specs in every cast. Lots of throwbacks. We drifted pretty close to the beach before we started getting take downs, anchored and shortly after you could cast anywhere full circle from the boat and we'd catch them. There were a couple of boats next to us but they seemed to be struggling for fish. We used speculizers and had no problems.

Tried that spot I spoke about recently for bull reds after the tide stopped but only found gaftops and a big sting ray. Stopped at an island on the way back, caught more nice specs and made it home exhausted.

Great day of fishing!

Speculizers are good for more than just catching fish! Took my Dad, Sis, Niece and Neph-n-law to SHell Bch. Went thru some shallow mud and the pee-hole got good-n-clogged. The usual hook-shank was too short so I cut the end of cork from an old speculizer and it fits perfect and goes way in as the perfect pee-hole-unclogger.

Didn't find hords of reds and specs as I expected at a honey hole off of St Milo. So we headed towards the Biloxi marsh and did much better. Came in early due to a family engagement and had to leave them biting. There's something about leaving them biting that gives you a good feeling. Maybe you feel that they may be there when you come back on the next trip.
Most fish were caught on speculizers and that lure remains the most consistent bait I"ve ever used.

FYI - Did a comparison of the Speculizer against Live Bait for the Big Fish FIshing Show on FRiday. The Speculizer stayed up toe to toe with the live bait and actually caught more because every time the fish took the live bait and they missed the hookset, they had to reel in and rebait and had to start over. WHen the Speculizer missed any hookups, I just kept popping it(a bit easier when they're after it) and they come back to it(most of the time).

Alabama now has stores carrying the Speculizer in Mobile, Orange bch, and Dauphin island. Please don't hesitate to contact me for details by either email or call 504-319-4446
