With extreme depths just a few miles off the beach, vast schools of baitfish, and a proliferation of oil rigs, southeast Louisiana is blessed with an incredible offshore fishery. In fact, there may not be any other place in the world as productive as Venice. But it was not too long ago when Venice was relatively unknown, except as a hub for the offshore oil and gas industry.

Today, the crew boats, supply ships and helicopters still come and go frequently. But in the last 10 years, these work-related vessels and oilfield aircraft have become a minority, outnumbered by boats with recreational applications. State-of-the-art bay boats with 200-hp outboards, and tournament-rigged sportfishing vessels have now made new ports in Venice.

Big changes have come to south Plaquemines Parish. But Capt. Kevin Hunter, a Baton Rouge native, remembers when Venice was still a relatively quiet place.
"In the 1980s and even into the early 1990s, there was not much going on down here," said Hunter, who owns the Venice-based Southbound Charters. "The difference now is like night and day."

The oil industry remains one of Louisiana’s greatest assets in the Gulf of Mexico. But an increasing number of people are discovering another valuable resource – big game fishing. This part of southeast Louisiana holds some of the world’s most desirable species such as monstrous yellowfin tuna, marlin, dolphin (mahi mahi) and wahoo. There are also massive offshore rigs that harbor vast numbers of red snapper, amberjack and grouper.
