KING MACKEREL

(Scomberomerus regalis) Members of the tuna family. Has a sharp drop in the lateral line under the soft dorsal fin. Adult kings are usually without spots.

World Record: 90lbs, Key West, FL, 1976 Smaller kings (7-25 lbs) migrate in large schools to the Gulf of Mexico in the spring and the larger fish are more solitary. Fish is the predominant food of kings. As juveniles they prey heavily on anchovies, cigar minnows and porggies, switching preference to small jacks and other larger fishes. This fish is not generally popular as table fare but don't tell Helmut Ermlich. This fish is his favorite, you can email him at (helmut@accesscom.net).
