Other Names :Silver King, Grande Ecaille, Tarpon
Range & Habitat :Gulfwide, bays, estuaries and beaches, often penetrating into coastal rivers. Tarpon can tolerate oxygen-poor conditions, being able to take air from the atmosphere with their lung-like bladder.
Identification & Biology :Tarpon are bright silver with a green or gray back. They have large underslung, scoop-shaped mouths. They are toothless. The last ray of the dorsal fin is elongated. Tarpon spawn in open waters between May through September, producing transparent eel-like leptocephali larvae. Tarpon grow rapidly, reach 12 inches in one year and 20 inches by age two. Tarpon seem to prefer to prey on schooling, silver-colored fishes such as sardines, anchovies, silversides, and mullet, but will also take crabs. Hooked tarpon are spectacular jumpers.
Size :Tarpon will reach well over 200 pounds, although fish 75-125 pounds are most common.
Food Value :None, although they are consumed in other countries.
