ANGLER'S GUIDE TO FISHES OF THE GULF OF MEXICO!

This book is a given for recreational and commercial fishermen as well as anyone who loves the outdoors! Since most anglers identify their fish by reviewing illustrations rather than using scientific keys, the authors have succeeded in making fishing easier by providing superb illustrations and detailed diagnostics for fish identification. A valuable, one-stop reference tool for everyday anglers, fisheries experts, biologists, and outdoors writers, this guide includes intensively researched information on 207 species of saltwater fish, essential data on each species’ habitat, identification, typical size, and food value. By Jerald Horst & Mike Lane, illustrated by Duane Raver. 207 species.

Range & Habitat :A surface dweller in shallow waters Gulfwide, although more common in central and southern waters.
Identification & Biology :This fish is silver in color, with a beautiful translucent green back. The lower jaw is elongated, much longer than the upper jaw. Three species of halfbeaks exist in the Gulf of Mexico. The ballyhoo has a pronounced orange color on the upper lobe of the tail fin compared to the upper lobe of the balao, Hemiramphus balao, which is bluish with a red tip. All halfbeaks make excellent bait. They form swift-moving schools that when startled, skitter rapidly on the surface.
Size :Up to 1 foot
Food Value :None, but they are excellent bait for pelagic fishes such as tuna, wahoo and billfish.
Description by: Jerald Horst, Associate Professor, Fisheries - LSU AgCenter
