| Other Names : | Hoo, Halfbeak, Ballyhoo | | Range & Habitat : | A surface dweller in shallow waters Gulfwide, although more common in central and southern waters. | | Identification & Biology : | This fish is silver in color, with a beautiful translucent green back. The lower jaw is elongated, much longer than the upper jaw. Three species of halfbeaks exist in the Gulf of Mexico. The ballyhoo has a pronounced orange color on the upper lobe of the tail fin compared to the upper lobe of the balao, Hemiramphus balao, which is bluish with a red tip. All halfbeaks make excellent bait.
