They are more common in the southern Gulf of Mexico. | | Identification & Biology : | The spotted moray is usually white or yellowish, with brown to purplish-black spots, but color is high variable. Additionally, about 20 other species of moray, with which it may be confused, exist in the Gulf of Mexico including the ocellated moray, Gymnothorax saxicola in the eastern Gulf and the blackedge moray, Gymnothorax nigromarginatus in the western Gulf.
