Can the jinx be broken?
My friend Russ has this theory about fishing jinxes. If he fishes with somebody 2 or 3 times and they don’t catch fish, then he won’t fish with them again because he believes it’s a jinxed combination. I never put much stock in that, but I gotta admit that I was starting to wonder. It seemed that whenever my friend Irene went fishing with me we couldn’t buy a fish, much less catch one. It was puzzling to me because each time we went it was after I had caught lots of fish the day before, the week before, or whatever, and the conditions each and every time seemed to be good - clear water, good tide range, plenty of bait in the water, you get the picture. We should have caught fish, but we didn’t. Well, I was bound and determined that it wasn’t going to happen again. This time Irene was going to catch fish, guaranteed! I called on the “MoJo” of Captain Mike Gallo to help bust this jinx. So, it was with high hopes that we started out Monday morning. Capt. Mike had never failed me in the past, but I admit I was a little nervous when we started out in Lake Ponchartrain with nothing to show for our efforts except a couple of pinfish. Was the jinx too strong even for the mighty Capt. Mike? After two spots we came up empty - and he had caught fish in those very same spots just the day before, and in much worse conditions! Could it be happening again? I told him about the jinx and Capt Mike just grinned. Without any hesitation he pointed the ‘Cajun Limo’ in the direction of the Biloxi marsh and away we went. We pulled up at the first spot and you know what? Whamo, Bamo, Ram-a-Lama-ding-dong, it was on! Irene caught her first Redfish! Her first Speckled Trout! Her first Sheepshead! Her first Black-Drum! And, just like that the jinx was broken. We ended the day with a limit of Reds, I don’t know how many trout (a bunch), a couple of “heads”, a couple of Drums, and smiles all around.
