I have a 2007 60hp Etec that I bought three months ago. The motor had 37 hours on it when I bought it (brought it to my local dealer to have him check it out and everything appeared good) Prior to me running it, the boat/motor had set up for 12 months and I don't know if any type of conditioner was added to the fuel prior to storage. First thing I did was drain the fuel tank (18 gal tank was 3/4 full). I filled up with fresh fuel and added Blue Stabil. I've put approx 12 hours on the engine since and continued to use Blue Stabil each time I get gas. I have not used gas with ethanol since I've owned the motor! It had a 10 micron fuel filer / water separater on the boat and I replaced the filer prior to running.

Concern: There is a little "hesitation" or "studdering" when I'm getting on a plane. Once on a plane it seems ok until I've run a few miles... when cruising at around 4000 rpms I can feel a very slight surging/hestitation in the motor. This surge cannot be seen on the rpm gage (no jumps in RPMs... not that severe) but you can sort of just feel it. If I bump up the rpms to 5000 or so.... it seems to go away. WOT for 15 seconds or so and the surge seems to go away even at the original 4000 rpms.

Someone reccommended trying a shock treatment of Sea Foam to try & remove any carbon build up and/or varnish build up from sitting for 12 months.

I've researched this "shock treatment" and it appears to be as follows:

(1) get a 1 gal gas container.
(2) fill with 3/4 gal of gas and add one 16oz bottle of Sea Foam
(3) unhook my fuel line from the boat tank (at the bulb) and connnect a 4ft length of new fuel hose.
(4) insert the end of the new hose into the gallon container ensureing the hose is at the bottom.
(5) Hook up ear muffs in the yard... crank engine and run at just above idle (approx 2000 rpms) for 15 minutes.
turn off and let sit for 15 min

(6) run for 15 more min
let sit for 15 min....

continue this process until the 1 gal container is empty. once empty, hook back up to the boat's tank and run the engine for 10 minutes to flush out the shock mixture.

Suggestions anyone?

I have heard of guys using this product. They claim that it helps. I have no experience with it myself. Is your engine still under warranty?

Seafoam is great stuff. I have used it before on the recommendation of a mechanic up north named Dunk. He is mechanic/surveyor, and a regular on a major boating forum. He recommends that treatment every 100 hours or so, and I believe that is a sound method for a decarb treatment. Seems unlikely that you would have a serious carbon problem after only 50 hours on the engine, but then I am not a mechanic!

I thought the same thing about carbon with less than 50 hours but I'm more focused on the engine sitting up for 12 months (supposedly was run on the garden hose every few months but who really knows).

... and maybe the Seafoam treatment will just give a good "cleansing".

(no harm can be done, right? maybe I just waste a little time trying to get my engine purring just right.)

I would think that sitting up could produce some varnish from the gas, possibley affecting injectors. The Seafoam treatment should clean the injectors as well as disolve and burn off carbon. Let us know how it worked for you.

Not a bad idea at all. I used the same method a couple of years back. It makes a lot of smoke. One of my neighbors almost called the fire department. I add a few ounces every couple of tanks for maintenance.

I do it at least once a year except I take it out to the launch and do it. Otherwise your neighbors are gonna call the fire department on you. i just make a fishing trip out of it. After I run all the seafoam through I run it wide open for a while.

Update to the "Shock Treatment".

Prior to treatment I drained my fuel tank again (it was nearly empty with only 5 gal left, so it wasn't a big deal). I replaced the 10 micron filter and cleaned out my sight glass / drain bowl.

Mixed 3/4 gal gas with 16 oz of Seafoam and did the 15 min routine mentioned above for two hours. My etec is very fuel efficient so I only went through about 30% of the mixture. I poured the other 70% in the empty fuel tank and filled up with 18 gallons of new gas. Took the boat out and ran her hard. (This was all done last Wed).

Sunday I went fishing and I think I got the results I was looking for. Smooth idle, no hestiation or studder when getting on plane and extremely smooth running engine at 4000 rpms. So far, good experience with Seafoam!
