CUSK EEL

(Brotula barbata) The Cusk eel has no spines in its fins, and the dorsal fin is a continuous around the tail and thus merges with the anal fin on the underside. The tail is sharply pointed, and the body, while robust forward, becomes progressively more flattened toward the rear. The uniform brownish-maroon color is distinctive in large juveniles (about a foot) to adults.

World Record: 15 lbs 3 oz, Destin, Floridia, 1989. These eels are a bonus to any fishing trip. They are caught at offshore rigs in water depths of 150 - 300 feet. They like cigar minnows & poggies. They are soft to the touch. Don't through these back. They have beautiful white meat that is best broiled due to it delicate texture and wonderful flavor. They are a little difficult to filet due to bones that extend almost to the skin along the lateral line. The extra work is worth the effort.
