Born and raised on the bayous of south Louisiana, Stan Cuquet has been fishing his entire life. Raised by a family of serious anglers, including six older brothers, Cuquet was exploring the marshes of Delacroix Island and Hopedale from as early as he can remember. At the age of 13, he owned his own flatboat. And before he was 15, the young Cuquet was making regular fishing trips out into the larger, open waters of Breton Sound for trophy speckled trout and tackle-busting redfish of monstrous proportions.

It’s no wonder why Capt. Stan Cuquet is considered one of the most talented and successful guides in south Louisiana. Today, Cuquet, known as The Lip Ripper to his many friends across south Louisiana, is known and respected for bringing home fish even in the worst conditions.

“Every weekend – every spare minute we had we had – we were fishing,” said Cuquet, now owner and chief operator of Castaway Charters. “My brothers were some of the best fishermen I’ve ever known. I learned from the best.”

Cuquet has fond memories of his family’s camp on Stump Lagoon in the 1960s and 1970s, when success was not measured by the number of fish caught – but by the number of ice chests filled. While times have changed, this area east of the Mississippi River in St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes remains one of the most productive in the United States. Cuquet was a commercial fisherman since he was 18, and learned from many of the legendary “old-timers” in this part of the country.

“It’s unparalleled,” said Cuquet. “There’s no other place like it. Nowhere are you going to find the quantity and quality of fish that we have here in the Delacroix, Hopedale and Breton Sound areas.”

As one of the most prolific estuaries in the country, this Mississippi Delta region holds fish all year round. It is indeed, an angler’s paradise.
