Venice, LA is a relatively unknown Bluewater fishery. Due to lack of services in the past anglers wanting to fish the Venice area were largely on their own. Year round we have the best offshore fishing in North America and boats would come from as far away as Houston and Pensacola to fish the rich waters of the delta. With the opening of Cypress Cove Marina in 1994 Venice was put on the map! Good news for the fishermen is that Venice will never be as crowded as Miami or Galveston because there is simply not enough land to support another Marina. A crowded day on the water for us is when we have to share a spot with two other boats!

We have 400’ of water less than six miles out, at ten miles we have 1000’, twenty-three miles 3000’and at fifty miles 5000’+. The numerous deep-water oil platforms and drill ships provide habitat for Tuna (sometimes bigger than you), Wahoo, Dorado, Marlin, Sailfish, Sharks, and numerous other pelagic species.

The loop current of the Gulf Stream often comes within three miles of the mouth of the Mississippi River and can generally be found no more than twenty miles out. It is quite a sight to see-the muddy water of the Mississippi River held at bay by this cobalt blue conveyer belt of food. The “rip” as we call it can stretch a hundred miles across the Delta and the line is often as clear and clean as if it were drawn with a pen. The rip gathers everything in it’s path- weeds, flotsam, ton upon ton of golden Sargasso, and most importantly FISH!

Year round we are the #1 tuna fishery in the North America! The yellowfin average 60-80lbs most of the year but in Feb/Mar and Oct/Nov we see a lot of fish in the 150-200lb class. That is not to say that we do not catch big fish year round because we do. During these months, however, the average fish will most likely be considerably larger. Most of the year we troll for tuna, but in Feb and Mar we anchor on the Midnight Lump and chum. It is not uncommon to have dozens of 150+ yellowfin just a few feet off the back of the boat eating whatever we throw them. There is a 3 per person limit on them but that is a TON of fish!

We catch wahoo year round as well but the best time to fish them is October-April with Feb and March being the peek months. All the wahoo in the gulf come to the Midnight Lump to spawn. Venice is known world wide for this run of winter wahoo. Average fish that time of year is 50-60lbs though we catch a lot of 70-100lb fish. Most of the year they are 30-40lbs. Wahoo are the cheetahs of the gulf and can sprint 0 to 60mph in three body lengths. They will take line off a reel with such speed and force you can literally smell the reel oil burning! They are considered one of the best eating and we have a self imposed 2-3 per person limit.

Dorado, also called Dolphin fish or Mahi Mahi, are here year round but if they are your target fish try May-Oct. The peak months are June-August. We often sight fish for Dorado using light tackle near the rip lines and floating debris. They are quite acrobatic and probably one of the most beautiful fish in the sea. Small fish will swarm around the boat in massive schools but we try not to kill any smaller than 10lbs. Dorado are a great fish for kids because they are easy to catch and will come right to the boat and take the bait.

Blue and White Marlin also cruise the rip lines and platforms off the mouth of the Mississippi. The first Marlin of the year is usually caught in April but the best months are June-Sept. Marlin are the Royalty of the gulf-staggeringly beautiful and full of everything an angler could want in a big game fish. They jump and greyhound across the surface putting on an incredible show! Average White Marlin is 60-70lbs. The average blue is 300lbs although we often see fish 500lbs+. We have a strict catch and release policy on all billfish. Most “mounts” these days are actually replicas made of fiberglass. We know how to measure and photograph your fish so that your replica will be a perfect copy of your catch.
