Capt. Carl

Venice, LA USA

On board the Mr. Dawson Sunday & Monday was Karla from Naples, FL.

We fished the Empire area both days and launched the boat around 8am because low tide was around 6am and we didn't feel like getting up early.

The first day we caught 27 speckled trout, 2 redfish and a flounder.  The water was clear, the sun was out, and we had a light wind.

The second day we fished the same area, but had to move to a different location and caught 42 speckled trout.  Still fishing in clear water over an oyster bed.  We was using live shrimp under a cork.  We also caught two nice redfish the 2nd day.

On board the Mr. Dawson Tuesday and Wedneday were Fred and Clara from Missouri.
The first day we headed down river looking for some clean water to fish in because of the rise in the Miss. river. We hunted around for several hours before we found sone half clean water. Using live bait under a cork Fred and Clara caught their limit of speckled trout.About eleven o'clock we moved close to the canes and using dead shrimp under a cork, they caught their limit of red fish.
The second day we went back to the same spot and found the water much dirtlier than the day before and the wind blowing harder. They still was able to catch twenty six trout and nine redfish.

Marsh/Coastal Fishing Report

Captain Carl

Venice, LA USA

I had a two day ladies fishing trip Monday and Tuesday ,with Tuesday being the better of the two days.Monday was rainy looking and windy and Tuesday was sunny and no wind.

Michelle,Sissy, and Laurie are from Denham Springs,La.

Monday the wind was blowing from the West-Southwest hard, so we fished on the East side of the Miss. River where we could find a calm spot to fish.We used live shrimp mostly under a cork and fished in about three feet of water. They caught ten red fish(and missed  several big ones),a Flounder,a few speckled trout, and some croakers.

Tuesday the Ladies wanted to go back to the same spot and try their luck. The sun was out and the wind was not blowing and the fishing was much better. One time Laurie had a large red fish on and it wraped around the trolling motor, then wraped around the anchor rope.We could get the fish a loose, so Sissy got the net and dipped it up.Another time Laurie had a large red fish on and was reeling it in and the fishing reel fell off the rod.It was'nt easy but the ladies got that one in to.They ended the day with 13 red fish, some trout, croakers, drums, and sheepheads. So it a fun day for everyone.

We now have a package deal for two people. For more information go to my web at www.baysidechartersla.com or just call and talk to Capt. Carl @ 225-9370873.

On board the Mr. Dawson Saturday was Rebecca, Darcy and Martha Elliott.  These three ladies come every year to catch redfish and trout.  All three are excellent fishing women.

When we left the marina the wind was blowing a small amount, but it wasn't long before it picked up to a hefty little breeze and the tide was extremely high.  So we didn't catch many trout.  And we didn't catch many redfish until the tide started down.  We kept moving around until we found some areas with shallow water and some redfish in it.  They finally caught their limit on redfish plus a few, but it took all day.  All the ladies had a great time.

We now have a package deal for two people that includes lodging, a boat lunch, cold drinks and water for the boat, and live shrimp, all at one low price.  To make reservations just call 225-937-0873 or e-mail me at baysidecharters@cox.net

On board the Mr. Dawson Friday was Reiner-The Brazilian and Richard.  We headed out at 6am in bad weather arriving at our first spot at approximatedly 20 minutes.

Reiner's first cast hooked him a 26 inch redfish and Richard's first cast hooked him a 25 inch redfish.  Reiner's second cast hooked him a large redfish, but it got away.  And Richard's second cast hooked him another large redfish that broke his line.  The lightning was so bad that I made the decision to leave without another cast and seek shelter.  So we waited until the lightning and storms were over, about an hour and a half, and then returned to the same spot.  Couldn't get a bite.  So we moved inland about a half of a mile and caught their limit of redfish, plus a few.  We also caught some speckled trout, black drum and sheephead.  We also had to dodge thunderstorms the rest of the day.  So we ended up with a nice mess of fish.

We now have a package deal for two people that includes lodging, a boat lunch, cold drinks and water for the boat, and live shrimp, all at one low price.  To make reservations just call 225-937-0873 or e-mail me at baysidecharters@cox.net

On board the Mr. Dawson Saturday and Sunday from Jackson, MS was Jim Ingram and his son James.  This was a last minute fishing trip decision that turned out to be good.

So we headed down river where we fished at several spots that I had fished the day before and caught slot size redfish. The fish just disappeared, and we caught nothing.  So we moved to some areas a few miles away and hooked up on some large redfish.  Most of the redfish were 36 - 43.5 inches long.  So Jim and his son had a blast catching these huge redfish.  They had so much fun we spent both days catching them.  All of them were caught using a jighead under a cork.  I posted only a few pictures of the redfish that they had caught.

We now have a package deal for two people that includes lodging, a boat lunch, cold drinks and water for the boat, and live shrimp.  To make reservations just call 225-937-0873 or e-mail me at baysidecharters@cox.net

On board the Mr. Dawson Aug. 8th was two ladies from Baton Rouge.  Laurie Lormand and Sheila Mink.

We left out of the Venice Marina and fished around the area surrounding the second spillway.  The speckled trout had slowed down some, but we still caught a few.  We fish around some points around the second spillway and the girls caught their limit of redfish plus a few.  Then we fished until a thunderstorm ran us back to the boat landing around dinner time.

On board the Mr. Dawson Sunday was Reiner-The Brazilian and his cousin, Rudy Fernandez, from San Antonio, TX.  His cousin drove down to see if he could catch a big redfish and he caught several.  See photos.

On Monday we had two men from San Antonio, TX again and all they wanted to catch was large redfish.  Monday the wind was blowing pretty hard out of the west, we were fishing in rough water and they still managed to catch several big redfish.  All were caught on artificial bait.  See photos.

Sunday was the sisters trip.  On board the Mr. Dawson was Renee Edwards and Carla Smith.

We left out of the Venice Marina at daylight.  We also headed down river and to the east side, back to the spot where the specks were caught the day before.  We trolled around for a while looking for the fish.  When we found them, the anchor went out.  Fishing with a sparkle beetle and a live shrimp, we caught fish pretty steady from about 8am - 11am for a total of 40 speckled trout and 14 redfish.  We had a couple reds over 27 inches.  The wind picked up a little bit, so we tried a few other spots, but we only caught a few more.  My daughters had a fun time fishing together, which was something they hadn't done in a long time.

On board the Mr. Dawson Saturday was Clyde Britt, his son Heath Britt, and Will Berot.

We left at daylight from the Venice Marina.  We headed down river and to the east side.  We fished several places before we started catching them about 9:00 am.  Using live shrimp, we caught 75 big trout around 2-3 lbs.  They pulled in eight redfish in a row, in the same spot using crank bait.  I'd say they had a good day.

Today's trip on the Mr. Dawson was a family day trip.  It was organized by Blake Smith and Ashley.  It took two days of planning right before the fishing trip.

It included, Michelle, Blake, Ashley, John, Lucy, and Ty.  All from Watson, LA.  Blake is Capt. Carl's grandson.

We headed out to fish the oyster beds near the Empire rocks for some speckled trout.  We caught about 30 trout using dead shrimp and left about 9:30 to hunt for some redfish.  We returned to the same place as yesterday and picked up seven or eight redfish.  We then moved about a quarter of a mile away and picked up another 20 redfish.  Several times, they had 2 or 3 fish at the same time.  So Mr. Blake is very proud of himself.

That was all of the good news.  The bad news was that all of the live shrimp died before we got to use them.  The other bad news was after we caught all those redfish we waited too long when the tide went out, and we got stuck on the oyster beds.  Three of the men and two of the women had to get out of the boat and push us off the oysters.  And they enjoyed that too!

Call Capt. Carl if you're interested in a trip!  (225)937-0873

Saturday morning I had Greg Callahan, his wife and 3 young sons on board the Mr. Dawson.

We left out of the Delta Marina at daylight in Empire, LA.   So we headed straight for the gulf where the water was clear and slick as a piece of glass.  We used live shrimp and caught a few trout.  But they would never start biting.  So we headed back inland in the oyster beds to look for some redfish.  We kept moving around until we finally found some redfish.  This is Greg's sons' first salt water fishing trip and first redfish adventure.  They had a great time pulling these redfish in, and I don't think they'll ever forget this redfish hole.  So they ended the day with a box full of fish.

Ken, Reese, Billy Ray and Linda from Shreveport, LA were on the Mr. Dawson for three days this week.  Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

On day one we left out of the Venice Marina after the fog lifted about 08:00am and headed down river.   We caught 14 speckled trout and 17 redfish.

The second day there wasn't any fog but they had plenty of wind and we fished in the same general location.  We caught about 15 redfish an 12 trout.

The third day, had a little fog but was able to drive through it and went back to the same location.  There wasn't any wind and this was the best day out of the three.  We had 25 nice sized trout and 20 redfish that was around 26 inches long, but they had to catch about forty or fifty before they had some small enough to keep.

They had a great time all three days, but the last day was the best.

On board the Mr. Dawson Friday evening and Saturday were Richard, Daryl, and Reiner.  Friday we fished on the east side of the Mississippi River in some muddy water after launching the boat at 2:30 pm.  We caught 4 redfish.  One large redfish we missed, the Brazilian had hooked it.  It was 30 plus pounds and it broke the rod and the dip net and then it escaped.  The Brazilian (Reiner) was not happy about this.

Saturday morning we left a daylight from the Venice marina.  We headed down river and to the east side.  We had very little luck with the speckled trout.  We caught only a few redfish in the first couple places we went to.  We then went to an area I hadn't fished in several years, which had just a small pocket of clear water in it.  We caught one redfish on a point and just waited a while until the other 15 reds came by.  So we ended the day with 18 nice sized redfish.  So when they quit biting the just turned off like a light switch and we couldn't catch the other 2 reds we need to reach the limit.

On Board the Mr. Dawson on Sunday was my daughter Michelle and my son-in-law Joe Braud.

First, we fished the east side and caught 10 nice redfish and a couple of specs.  Then we left and fished one of the spillways on the Mississippi River.  We caught 5 more redfish and 8 flounders , 2 striped bass and 6 speckled trout.

The water in the Mississippi River has cleared up and has pretty much cleared up everywhere which is making the fishing much better.

Joe and Michelle had brought their own boat down and fished alone Saturday on the west side.  They had their limit of redfish plus they caught more and threw them back.  Some of the fish both days were caught using dead shrimp under a cork.  A lot of the fish were caught fishing on the bottom.

I had several trips during the week and they all had good fishing days.  We caught the limit on reds and some trout each day.

On board the Mr. Dawson on Monday were Ken Harper and his wife Terri, back for a second day.

On Monday live shrimp were available so we could catch some speckled trout.  We headed back to the same locations that we fished Sunday but the only thing we could catch was catfish.  So we found only one of the locations had any trout and redfish.  So after trying all the spots we returned to the spot that had some redfish and we fished there the rest of the day.  The fish were biting but they were real slow.  So they ended the day with nine nice sized redfish and fourteen 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 lb. speckled trout.  All the trout were caught using live shrimp under a cork and the redfish were caught using dead shrimp under a cork because the redfish would not bite the live shrimp.

On board the Mr. Dawson today was Ken Harper and his wife, Terri, from Alexandria, LA.

We left the Venice Marina at daylight today and headed down river just to find the redfish waiting for us. It didn't take long for them to catch their limit plus a lot more that they threw back.  We fished at least six more different locations and caught redfish at every spot. We were using dead shrimp under a cork.  We also caught a flounder - lots of catfish, drums, sheepheads - and a few speckled trout.  Live shrimp wasn't available at the marina.

The Mr. Dawson has been in the shop for repairs for the last three weeks so I have been without a boat. Mr. Danny Harrell from Denham Springs had won a free trip in a hospice raffle.  After I told Danny that my boat was in the shop he decided to use his boat for the trip. Danny decided to invite his friend Pastor Herman Holland to enjoy the fishing trip with him.

So we headed out at daylight from the Venice Marina and went downriver on the East side.  The first stop produced a redfish on the very first cast and a large thunderstorm.  Herman hooked his first redfish on the first cast and this was his first redfish ever.  After the wind picked up and the waves got large, we decided to move on to a different area.  The second spot produced nothing.  The third spot produced nine more redfish and an even larger thunderstorm.  We ran for shelter for about an hour and then we turned back to the third spot.  So we caught another five redfish and a few speckled trout until the whole area turned black and we left in the rain and lightning.

We ended the day with 15 redfish and a few speckled trout.  We probably would have caught more trout but we were unable to purchase any live shrimp.  Mr. Danny Harrell had bad luck with salt water fishing in the past but hopefully this trip made up for that.

On board the Mr. Dawson today was Stacey and David from Hattiesburg, MS.

We left the Venice Marina at daylight and headed north toward Empire, LA. We stopped at several different locations and didn't get a bite.  After we moved far enough north, the water got cleaner and clearer until we started catching trout.  The trout ranged in size from 13-16 inches in length.

They ended the day with their limit of speckled trout and redfish.  About half the trout were caught on live shrimp under a cork and the rest were caught using a red DOA under a cork.  All the redfish were caught using dead shrimp.

Madge
Just spent two great days fishing with Captain Carl Smith in Venice. The first day we caught 16 red fish and 55 trout. The second day was even better. We caught 100 trout and 1 red fish before 9:30. Mary and I kept the captain busy, busy baiting our hooks and taking our fish off our lines. Often he had to net them because they were really big fish. Our husbands got to fish more than usual because the Captain took care of us. Ladies, Mary and I did not bait a single hook. Thanks Captain for a great trip. Madge and George and Roy and Mary

My first fishing experience was unbelieveable. I was invited by my best friend of more than 30 years to take a fishing trip to Venice La. The two of us recently divorced after more than 20 years of marriage, I was not thinking of fishing as our girls night out, if you know what I mean. Well, I dont know when I have had more fun.

Captain Carl of Bayside Charters took on this adventure knowing it was my first fishing experience. Smiles all the way we headed to "HIS" fishing hole. Boy, was it a hole!! Laurie and I both reeled as fast as we could fish after fish. BIG REDFISH!! Captain Carl even put my bait on the hook! As fast as he could get the fish off he baited agian. We caught our limit and fished to throw back. The throwing back became disheartening so we headed back to the Marina.

Everyone asked, "WHERE DID YOU CATCH THOSE REDFISH?" My answer (like Captain Carl says) IN THE MOUTH!!!!

Yesterday was the 2nd day of Jimmy Jarrell and Neil Chollette's two day fishing package.  I had a small problem with the trim on the motor of the Mr. Dawson. After about 30 minutes we got a temporary fix for the motor and kept going.  The wind was blowing a little when we arrived at the spot.  They caught a few large trout and some of the other boats in the same area were catching fish too, but it wasn't long when the wind picked up and the fish quit biting.  We moved to another location - out of the wind - and picked up some more trout and we ended the day with 25 larger than normal trout and 7 redfish.  All the fish were caught with live shrimp under a cork.

Just spent two great days fishing with Captain Carl Smith in Venice. The first day we caught 16 redfish and 55 trout. The second day was even better. We caught 100 trout and 1 redfish before 9:30. Madge and George and Roy and Mary.

Jimmy Jarrell from St. Francisville and Neil Chollette from Central were on board the Mr. Dawson today - they are the second group to use the special two day package I have been advertising.

We left the marina just before daylight and headed back to the same location as yesterday.  The fish were still there, but the bite was much slower.  They caught their limit of large trout and I fished too catching my limit of 25 trout.

All the fish were caught using live shrimp under a cork.  These fish were in the 2 to 6 lb. range.  Most were 3 to 4 lbs. with several weighing 5 to 6 lbs.  We will be back in the morning to see if they are still there.

George & Madge and Roy & Mary were back on the Mr. Dawson again today.  They were at the Marina at 4:45 AM and ready for more action.  So, we left a little before daylight and headed back to the same location we fished yesterday.  They were a little disappointed to catch only a few fish there as there was no wind at all.

After about an hour and a half we decided to relocate.  The next stop and the first cast by one of the ladies landed a nice trout.  Down went the anchor.  After about 15 minutes the ladies were catching at every cast.  It was really enjoyable watching these ladies catching all these fish.  Their husbands enjoyed watching them reel them in also.  So by about 9:30 AM they had their 100 large size trout in the 2 to 4 lb. range and 1 redfish.   All the fish were caught using live shrimp under a cork.  Nothing would bite on plastic bait.

On Board the Mr. Dawson today was the first couple who wanted the special pricing plan I had developed.  They are George & Madge Dupeire and Roy & Mary Robbins - both couples are Louisiana residents.

The first day was just fine - we fished the east side today with very little wind.  They first caught 15 nice size redfish and then we moved on to a different location to catch 58 speckled trout.  All the fish were caught using live shrimp under a cork. They really enjoyed the first day of their two day trip.

Tomorrow we may fish a different location depending on the wind direction.

On board the Mr. Dawson today was Ken Oupre and his Dad, John.  We left the marina at daylight and headed downriver on the eastside.

It was an incredibly slow day today with the fish.  The wind was blowing fairly hard, but we found some clear water out of the wind and still there were no fish.  We tried a lot of different locations but it was the same everywhere.  We caught a few nice trout and 7 redfish.  Hopefully, the wind will die down next week and the fish will resume their biting habits.

Kenny & Rece Smith from Sheveport LA were on the Mr. Dawson Wednesday and Thursday.

Both days we left the marina at daylight and returned about 1 PM.  The 1st day they caught their limit of redfish plus a few they threw back.  The wind was blowing hard both days, but much harder the second day.  They had to work much harder to catch their limit of reds plus 5 specs and 2 sheephead.  The second day we used live shrimp under a cork.  We had to fish up in the roso canes to catch the redfish.  I anchored the boat up in the canes and this is where they caught their fish.

They both really enjoyed their 2 day trip and so did I.

Come fishing in Venice, LA.   Call Capt. Carl Smith at (225)937-0873 of (225)262-1672.

A great day on the Mississippi River Delta.  Capt. David Iverson and I took Dana Holt and his crew from Tennessee down river for some redfish action.  The Mr. Dawson had over 30 reds, while Capt. Dave had 45 with Dana's son and two teammates.   We also boated 18 nice specs.  We had several reds over 27 inches with one 26 lb. bullred.  So we released most of the fish and just kept enough to eat.  The fishing is great.  Come see us.
