Fishing in the Rain at Golden Meadow

All morning long the rain came down in blinding sheets; but if you suspected that Frank Davis and his fishin' team would have stayed home today because of it, then you suspected wrong. As it turned out, they got drenched to the skin but they had a great time catching both redfish and speckled trout on the marshes at Golden Meadow between squalls.

Fishing under a chugging cork about 12 inches deep, using live Cocahoe minnows, Frank and his fishing guide John Aucoin went no further than a couple of blocks from the Catfish Lake Boat Launch before they got into the hoardes of fish that were swept into the southeast Louisiana coastal marshes by the two recent tropical systems.

"They're all along these banks," Aucoin explained, "looking for whatever they can grub up and snack on. If you intend to catch them you need to be rigged to fish 'em really close to the grass--in fact, almost deep into the grass at some points. And if you find a break in the marsh where two points create a natural pocket or pass, focus really good on that location. I can guarantee you that there will be fish there!"

While today was tough to fish because of the torrential rains that plagued Frank and John all morning, both say that this weekend will be a totally different story--sunny, cooler weather will provide excellent conditions for weekend anglers. Tactically, look for cleaner water, look for moving water where the tides are shuffling baitfish in and out of the marsh, and look for birds diving, giving away locations of feeding gamefish.

Since the marsh is full of hurricane-pushed fish, no one particular spot will be dominant over the others. The guys suggest, though, that you concentrate your efforts close to the grass lines in all the inland duck blinds and deadend pipeline canals between Golden Meadow and Leesville. Sample each of the ponds using your trolling motor, but once you find a pile of fish at any one spot ease the anchor over and catch 'em til they quit!

"But don't be misled," John quickly added. "For the most part I'm talking specifically about the marsh from Cut Off to Golden Meadow to Galliano to Leesville to the Fourchon to Grand Isle. But the methodology we're recommending will prove successful wherever you fish, from here to Lafitte to Port Sulphur to Lake Borgne and everywhere in between! Just make time to get out after them!"

In the meantime, be careful and courteous out there, y'all,

Frank Davis

P.S. If you find that you need to talk with John Aucoin concerning the fishing forecast or reserving a charter, you can reach him in Golden Meadow at 985-632-6988.
