GREATER AMBERJACK

(Seriola dumerili) Amberjacks get their name from the amber color strip usually present from the eye along the middle of their body. The minimum sizes on greater amberjacks in Louisiana and not on the other amberjacks make it valuable to know the differences. The greater amberjack has a tan or slate sort dorsal and a small eye; its diameter is less than half the snout length. The greater amberjack has 12 to 15 gill rakers.

World Record: 155lbs 10 oz, Challenger Bank, Bermuda 1981. The greater amberjack is one of the giants of the jack family and may reach one hundred and seventy pounds, at a length of more than five feet. Greater amberjacks are not prone to schooling and prowl around rigs in waters generally over 150 feet. The best baits are fish in the 1-3lb range, their favorite may me grunts or pinfish (live). This is Norman Flynn's favorite fish, known to him as the "chicken of the sea".
