Al,

I just sent you an e-mail. I'll try to call you later this afternoon or tomorrow to discuss further. The snapper issues, in my opinion, have resulted more from politics than from biology. I am not what you would normally consider a desktop biologist. I'm a biologist that tries to exercise reasoning and common sense in the decision making process, but often times, I'm not the one that gets to make the ultimate decisions on how to handle the projects I work on.  These issues can be quite complicated. Not just from science but from safety, liability, politics, etc. Every discussion that we have can lead to more questions and more discussions about the marine environment.  I'll try to give you a call to discuss this further.

In response to KCR

With all do respect sir not everyone on this site listens to everything i say and as a matter of fact there are folks that that quite frankly hate my guts but im not seeking election for any office so i will freely speak my mind.

Your first sentence states taxpayers dont pay for removal of oil rigs and your last sentence states we do pay for their removal???????????????????

I do not agree that they are hazards to navigation when the simple fix is light and horn navigational benifits to boaters and can be run by simple solar power which is already in place and common nature of the industry to do so.Do the tax payers want to pay to keep them up or tear them down?

I have went round and round with "BIOLOGIST" for over ten years now and have changed minds of many that want to push simple science from their desk and not in the field.

Take the snapper situation for example. There are no statistics that are firm and true just simple "biologist" mumbo jumbo that now has Louisiana fisherman staying home instead of pumping money into a needing economy.

I am not bashing you or anyone but simply pointing out the fact that you answered your own question with that post.

I will not post anymore comments on this issue to save Mike Lane from constant monitoring of opposing feelings on this subject{including mine} but do invite you to call me for a friendly conversation about this subject as i never will agree on removing any platform and have 100 percent facts to back my reasoning.

Heading to Fourchon for a fishing trip and again all respect due to your own comments about this.

I can be reached at 504-710-2950

PeeWee,

I knew I was ranting about electrolysis but did not realize I was being sexist.  Wow.  How so?

Guys, be careful at the launches.  Had another report today of someone stealing axles and springs off of a trailer.  Do not ask me where because I will not say....does not seem to be one location but someone or someones (lol) running around looking for easy marks.  Be careful!

Dr. Fish

Scottsville, NY USA

Another outstanding day on the water off of Southern LA.  Ran out of Venice on Saturday with my good buddy (and one heck of a guide) Capt. Kevin Beach (Mexican Gulf Fishing Company) aboard the Pale Horse catamaran.

Weather looked iffy early in the morning but after looking at the winds and radar we made a break for it around 5:45AM.  Thank goodness the C.G. lifted the no wake rule and the Pale Horse was able to cruise at a comfortable 40MPH+ to the grounds.  We started out looking for Tuna but the seas quickly stopped that plan and we headed north in search of Grouper and Snapper with Shimano’s Butterfly Jigs.  The weather did settle down a bit in the afternoon thank goodness and the 25MPH winds subsided to the forecasted 10-15MPH.

Man o man was it a Butterfly jigging clinic.  As fast as we dropped Flat-sided jigs and standard Butterfly jigs, rods were bent.  With the current and winds as they were the best jigs this day were the Flat-Sided versions in 224gr in Pink/Blue, Blue/Mackerel and Green/Mackerel.  It was so fast and furious that many times if you pulled a fish off another one piled onto the jig before you could turn the handle more than a couple more times.  The standard Butterfly Jigs are also very effective in the 160gr and 200gr in Mackerel/Silver and Sardine/Silver but I ran out of these on the previous days trip.  All jigs were armed with our new Mustad Assist rigs.  Some were using the Spectra Cordage rigs in 5/0 and 7/0 in ML and 1L lengths and others were using the ARS49 wire single Assist Rigs in 5/0 and 7/0.

If you are not targeting fish out there with Butterfly jigs, you really need to give it a shot.  We wasted no time catching bait or buying bait and got to the grounds quicker and yet still caught all the Grouper and Snapper we wanted.  Size of the fish were very respectable as well with a couple Scamps within a pound or two of 20 pounds and several Snapper in the mid-teens.  Not to mention it’s a LOT of fun.  We also use these jigs with great success on Tuna, Dolphin, Wahoo, Cobia and Amberjack as well as other species.  On yesterday’s trip we caught around 10 Bull Redfish up to around 30 pounds.

As always, it was a real pleasure fishing with Capt. Beach and we were also joined by the boys from Puglia’s.  A good time was had by all and once again coolers were filled using Mustad Assist Rigs and Shimano Butterfly jigs.  Looking forward to the next trip!

For the people asking about blue water and rips, according to Ripcharts.com and the satelite pics they are showing from yesterday, the blue water seems to be south about 15-17 miles out of SW Pass. There doesnt seem to be much of a rip and that's probably due to the river level dropping.....hope this helps!

slidell, LA United States

In response to Capt. Al Walker

Capt. Al,

You are very well respected on this website and some people listen to everything you say. But, please get your facts correct. The public does not pay to have rigs removed no matter how you look at it. As a biologist and fisherman I understand your desire to leave all rigs in place and I know of the benefits to the marine environment that these rigs provide. I do strongly support the rigs to reef program to sink rigs in place, when practical. However I do not believe we should leave all rigs standing when production is complete. Somebody has to remain ultimately responsible for the rigs while they are standing or they become a hazard to navigation and ultimately a safety issue. The rigs will still require maintenance to prevent them from becoming a safety hazard.  Also, oil companies are constantly going out of business or merging with other companies and they will look to get out of being liable for the rigs. Without a company to maintain the standing rigs it will ultimately end up being maintained with tax payer money. The state of Louisiana is spending a lot of taxpayer money to remove old rigs from inshore waters that have become environmental issues.

Chas Champagne

Slidell, LA USA

No fishing days in last week been busy getting things together with the new fishing Jewelery in stock at our shop Champagne Jewelers.  But this week I was able to fish monday, tuesday and wensday morning before I went to work each day.  Thats the beauty of Lake Pontchartrain can fish hard till 10am or so and still make it in to work for a 9hr shift still energized.  With Tropical storm Eduardo in the area monday and tuesday the winds were screaming out the SE and options were limited to where we could fish.  My friends Capt. Jonathan Sanzchez and Capt. Kerry Audibert were land locked having to cancel there charters due to the high winds but what do they want to do on their day off?  You've got it FISH.  Thats all they want to do.  I talked to Kerry Sunday where he sounded bumbed he was going to be off the water for the next several days due to the high winds I asked him if he was interested in making a trip with me as I have been fishing an area that a southeast wind has no effect on, it could be blowing 50mph SE and still fishable.  So the trip was planned and Capt. Jonathan met Kerry and I at the crack actual an hour before the crack of dawn at the launch.  We fished in the dark and picked up a few before a 2 min downpoor nailed us.  Kerry and Jonathan told be they could see rain comming down the canal and we needed to get back to the launch quick I should have listned as needless to say we got hammered.  It was like someone dumped a bucket on us real quick and then it was over.  Oh well we were awake then.  We never got on a good bite anywhere but cherry picked a few good fish in every spot scrapping a decent box together or a great one in my eyes coinsidering we were fishing under conditions where a lot of guides had to cancel.  We landed 18 trout and ended the day with 23 fish total.  With several trout over 3lbs and done by 9am and back at work for 11am.  Can't beat it.  Tuesday I brought by good buddy and great fisherman Brandon Erwin back to the same location where we were greated to the big SE winds again but never even looked at the flags as it doesn't matter for this spot as long as some kind of east is in it.  So we launched the boat again around 5am and what a differnce a day made.  It was a one stop shop for brandon and I to load the box with some hammers especially for August.  Brandon and I boated 35 horses in a row quick and then I decided to make a move to maybe have a shot to put Brandon on a real big one.  We needless to say the next spot was terrible but the mission was accoplished.  We snuck over to a big trout hole where we only had one bite but the fish was over 5lbs and brandon caught it.  So we wrapped it up after that.  We had forty or so fish and I had to put the tackle box on top the Ice chest lid on the trailer ride home because the lid wouldn't close.  Again back in time to make in to work before 11am.  Wensday I fished the rigolets with my Uncle Mel who hasn't fished with me in three years but we used to go 3 days a week together back in the hay day of Lake Pontchartrain so he was going to very hard to impress as he has landed many mules in his day when we the lake was on fire with 6,7, and 8 pounders.  With the wind back to reality the rigolets was calling my name.  My Uncle Mel Jeffery grew up fishing the rigolets so thats where we decided to go.  We went late trying to catch the change in tide which I predicted around noon due to what it did monday and tuesday but I was way off on my prediction as when I was driving down the pass I could see the crab traps with the water boiling out around them.  I new it was going to be tuff.  As I pulled up to spot one there was 7 boats on it.  On a wensday WOW!  I have never seen so many boats out on a wensday. Glad to see everyone enjoying what a great fishery we have in the lake.  So I started the day in a secondary spot.  where my uncle and I started off nailing the trout 5 or 6 in a row then drum city then ladyfish city and then time to go.  When I was leaving I noticed all 7 boats gone and I was shocked I figured no way they weren't a few fish there as this spot is great but after 4 cast there I saw why they moved it was a dead see there and it may have been the 1st time in my life I have ever seen this spot completely dead on a falling tide but I knew they would bite sometime there so it stayed in the brain.  Off we went as I was not looking foward to burning the gold price Gasoline all over lake borgne in a cherry picking event we were about to go through to put fish in the boat.  Off we went hitting about 7 spots catching one at one then 5 on a nother then none on one then 15 on a nother and so forth.  I decided to give my "A" spot another give as I had faith in it and great plan it was.  We had saved our best 30 baits for this hole and it payed off as we picked off our best 15 trout here till we ran out of bait.  and home we were.  Beautiful day wensday and great day with the family.  We ended the day with 30-40 trout 3 reds and 10 smorgushborg fish(sheepshead, drum, and such).  Trout no where near as big as monday and tuesday but up to 3.5lbs.  Great week off to lafayette tommorow after work to see My Uncle's horses race at Evangline Downs.  Wish us luck.  Gotta come see our fine line of Fishing/nautical Jewelery as Mike Lane can vouch for the increadible Speckled Trout I had especially made for us in this area.  We have everything from catfish to Blue Marlin to crabs and shrimp.  In silver or gold.

Come see us at Champagne Jewelers(champagnejewelers.com) or also carried at Gus' bait and tackle in Slidell.  985-707-9049. Check out Sportsman's Paradise TV on RodnreelTV.com to get more info and tips for fishing the lake area as it has clips from almost every trip we have made in the last 6 weeks. Last show has great tips for how to fish seabrook where Stevo Steve Wicks lands a monster trout that was weighed in the star which was in 2nd place last week. Also it shows the effectiveness of a Ribbit frog for bass fishing a we crushed and I mean crushed the bass on it one day 2 weeks ago in Kiln Mississippi on it. This weeks show airs some things we have been doing in the Rigolets and how to fish flounder in the Rigolets as it is aired at a perfect time as the Rigolets is about to get hot and the flounder fishing explodes. Capt. Kerry Audibert gives a fantastic documentry of how to properly fish with live croakers for mule trout in the sound in this weeks show. This clips are as real and current as it gets and true info from people who are out there all the time. A lot of shows are aired months after the fact so what good does that do. As it is in december and your getting tips on how to throw topwater on a day probably shot in september. Check um out and email me on what you think. Let me know if you are interested in something particular in the lake area and I will be glad to make a show on it if next time I am in the area and give tips on what I may know about it. Good luck to all and Good Fishing! 3 pics below

MidLife Crisis---MLC Charters

Venice, LA USA

Today I had Dr. Scott Guidrey and his two sons, Hunt and Brad.  We headed for South Pass this morning with a strong NW wind behind us.  Fished along the  beach with live shrimp under a cork.  The water was not very clear but we did catch a few trout, one came in just over 4 lbs.  The boys both landed huge bull reds before we moved inside and found the honey hole for 19"-25" reds.  They were stacked up and we could have boated 50 or more.  The guys caught their limits and released a few more before we headed in.  The winds were much stronger today than predicted and that always presents a challenge.  We came out with a pretty good day and the guys were plenty happy.  Jesus is Lord.

I always see people asking where the rips, blue water, grass lines ect. are. I fly offshore often and all of these are very easy to spot. It would seem practical to me to get with some the pilots and offer them a nominal fee and they could get coordinates and post them daily. I am sure that they would be glad to help out on this. They all have GPS's and could keep everyone updated on this type of information. Just a thought.

Port Sulphur, LA USA

Had the pleasure of fishing with Gary from work for the first time in almost a year.  I had high hopes this morning passing the Entergy building, and seeing the flag limp.  Once again passing the refinery, the smoke stack was laid over but very long indicating light winds.  Boy was I surprised when I launched the Xpress at the Port Sulphur boat club, and the wind was blowing steady out of the West North West approximately 15 MPH.  Bypassed the trout, and immediately went fishing for reds.  Stayed close to the marina and we were able to muster up 8 beautifully bronzed red fish, 3 of the most beautiful flounder I have seen in a long time, and two trout.  The tide was falling hard, and it wasn't long before there was not even enough water to make it into the major ponds.  Ended the day at noon.  All fish caught on live 'hoes 18 inches under a cork.  Another great day on the water!  Can't wait to give it a go again!

Yesterday the Stricklin/Benezech fishing team came down to BSM ready for some of this great TROUT action...we started and ended on a short time frame in Lake Fortuna....TROUT were thick but "Flipper" broke up the party several times...we took the easy approach and waited them out rather than move...GOOD CALL...Live Boogies and Gulps!

The "limits"(actually 46 as I can't count..4 whites fooled me) hit the ice at 10am...not fast but steady...Hal Stricklin has been a friend of BSM with various lighting/bulbs/fixtures...the payback/Thank You was a pleasure!

Today was one of those thank you very little weather man...blowing 15plus out of the NW and I did not see that anywhere...well we tucked in to Fortuna where I left them yesterday with Bob and Matt...BOXED 17 nice TROUT...SHOULD HAVE STAYED ON THIS BITE!

Moved out to the SOUND...ROUGH and hard to FISH the WIND/TIDE criss-crossed...not much...tucked back in to the CHANNEL...found several nice 3lb TROUT but only a few...tucked in closer as the NW was over 15 and getting thing pretty dirty...Bob and MATT were still swinging though...JACKPOT at one of my "BAD WEATHER" save my butt places off the CHANNEL!

The TROUT/REDS/FLOUNDER were all mixed in in one foot of very low water but the TWIN VEE eased in fine!
The REDFISH TOOK OVER...Perfect 26-28 inch "tournament" specials...we caught over 30 in no water and watched a shallow water show that Bob and Matt really enjoyed...we BOXED their Bull and SLOT "LIMITS" and I jumped in for a few for the "home" grill...very cool few hours!

Bob mentioned how much he loves a fork and FLOUNDER falling apart...pulling out the back bone and enjoying the great taste...BAMM, three FLOUNDER in the next 10 minutes between REDFISH...unreal but just PERFECT!  We even added a dozen TROUT around the CRAZY REDFISH ACTION!

FINAL COUNT:  33 SPECKLED TROUT...2 14inch CHANNELS,4 FLOUNDER...12 boxed REDS(20 released in shallow water)...26-28 inches...good grillers!
A nice BOX of 50 FISH with alot more REDFISH ACTION...more importantly a great day with some really good people...very rewarding day guys! LIVE BOOGIES and GULPS.

Fishing Magician Charters

Today, Capt. Jason had the pleasure of fishing with John Segal and his guests. The guys only wanted to catch big trout, and didn't want to catch anything else. Capt. Jason tried his best, so they headed out to Central. But, by the time they arrived there the seas were 4 - 5'. So, the guys caught a couple of trout and called it a day. They are coming again with us next week to give it another try.

Capt. Lester had Joe and his group. They limited out early this morning with trout that were in the 1 - 3 lb range.

I had the pleasure of fishing with my oldest son and 3 of my grandchildren. Boy, did they do a great job! All morning long I heard, "Poppy, I've got another one! Poppy, I've got another one. I need help." I think they had things mixed up though. I needed the help. We really enjoyed the morning. The kids caught 40 speckled trout in the 1 - 3 lb range.

All fish were caught 2' under a popping cork using Campo's live shrimp. Check out the pictures. If you want to catch some fish and have some fun, Fishing Magician Charters is the one. Treat youself, your family, friends, and enemies to a great fishing trip. And then, maybe you won't have them as enemies anymore.

To the 25'or so Cat that almost ran over me while anchored off to the side of the mouth of flatboat pass on Saturday, Aug 2nd. @ 9:00am. What the hell were you thinking? Instead of 1) slowing down and 2) changing your course to run approx 20' from my boat(17'flatboat w/85 suzuki) at 3/4 speed, I just don't get it. You ran over my buddy's fishing line and through the last portion of the canes at the mouth of the pass. I realize there is an obstruction in the Pass but you might want to slow down and ask about that obstruction before running down the next guy anchored at the mouth of the pass.
This boat had at least 5 people in it and had a big "logo name" written on the side of the boat. We were so surprised by you turning toward us we just didn't catch the name of your boat. We had at least three boats go buy us before you came along and almost knocked us out of my boat. All the others slowed down and headed out of the pass without incident. Should any of the people that were in this boat read this message, I would like to know who the so called skipper was so I can call attention to his lack of skill & danger to others.
