Get the book "Angler's Guide to Fish of the Gulf of Mexico." It is real nice and the pic. are beautiful. I got it for christmas (I know it's to early) and I do like it. Maybe get the sign one, it would be a keeper . A fishing magazine would be an idea too.You can find them on the internet . I got a magazine (fishing) for my hubbie. 1 year, 12 issue for $20.00. Hope this will help you a little bit.

Handheld VHF; good, comfy lifejacket, possibly an auto inflatable; the book "Specks" by Todd Masson(?); gift certificate to favorite sporting goods store; if they (or you) have a GPS, maybe some new mapping software; an electric filet knofe (Wal-Mart had a Rapala in a case w/ dc chord, AC adapter, and aligator clips, 2 sets of blades for around $40).
In fact, just give me your credit card number and I'll take care of it for you!!

Acedemy has plenty of nice reels. Okumas are generaly under $100, and they are just as realiable as a Penn or Shimano.

Gift time is a time to ask for or give things I think are kinda over-priced but still nice to have. Two things that come to mind are:
Stainless Cajun Anchor
Baitwell System

How about a Pirannah electric filet knife by Mr. Twister? Costs about $40. Academy carries them. Works great for fileting specs and works best for cleaning reds.

Hey I love my Grab it Glove. As many fish I grab and unhook in a day I need all the protection I can get. It gets you back in action faster than bending over and washing your hand off in the water, searching for a rag, or watching your slime filled rod go shooting out your slime filled hand. Go ahead and call me a girlyman, I can take it.

Where did you get the "Grab it Glove" Capt Rory? Sounds like a good idea. If I go to Academy, and ask for that name, will they know what I'm talking about?

Academy does not have them. I know that Puglia's and Profesional's has them in the N.O. area. You can order from their web site or get more info on stores that carry it there. It comes with a set of pliers, but the pilers rust quickly unless you keep them oiled regularly. I end up taking the pliers and the attachment off since it gets caught on stuff while moving around the boat. Since I am all over the boat with customers on board they are more trouble than worth (the pliers not the customer) to me. I have pliers in holders all over my boat, 2 up front, 1 in rear and 1 on console.

Oh, Captain Rory, ye of little faith in the church of Academy. They now DO carry it. They put it in the section with the fillet knives. They only carried the Frabill glove, but now they have the jus grab it for 29.99 I believe.

You can all me girlieboy if you want, too! I don't want that slime on my pole, and there is something refreshing about not eating a fishy-smelling sandwich. But, I just use my fish cleaning glove when unhooking a fish. Cheaper, too.

Man I'm addicted to the Just Grab it glove. The fact is you'll catch more fish using it. Think that sound crazy??? OK...YOu've been fishing all morning rite...It's cold but here comes 11am and they're finally starting to bite but who knows how long...You start catching them fish after fish. With the grab it glove and their pliers by my side I'm taking the fish off and casting back in the water in seconds. My hands are dry(BOTH OF THEM) and I'm bringing in another fish while my pal next to me is still looking for his pliers or rag that was next to him a second a go but fell under neath the console or he's trying to rub the slime off his hands on his pants so he can hold his rod. Oh yeah, since it's the dead of winter now and then I hear him say, "Damn my hands are cold!" I wish I could relate with him but my hands are dry and I've caught 7 more fish than him because I've been using the best fishing Christmas present of 2006. Which I proudly use on every trip.
So, is the question does the Just grab it glove make you less manly?? Well, does using a rag make you less manly? what about using pliers instead of toughing the hook out with your hands. Heck,if that' the case, did using a rodnreel make you girly when it first came out??? If so, let's go back to jumping in the water and catching them with our hands in the winter. Now THAT would be manly!
One of the biggest favors you'll do for yourself or your buddy is get the glove/pliers belt in question. I guarantee you won't fish without it once you catch fish using it.
Just one man's opinion.
If your wife isn't mad at you for fishing too much...You're not fishing enough! |

Capt Rory/Rebdone.........thanks for the info on the "Grab it Glove". Never tried them, but will have to give it a try. Bone makes a compelling reason....hell, maybe I can catch 2 trout limits with that to help me...OH, limit is still 25/PPPD, right?

I believe I'll be looking for one on my next trip to Academy. With the fishing rag you are wiping off your slimy hand onto a slimy rag. I never hold the fish with the rag and the rag gets slimy anyway. Its just a slimy situation! I could use a good Slime Buster!
