It seems that any survey taken by LWF is at best spoty and inconclusive as to the population of any specie. Secondarily there never is an increase creel limit from these surveys as in redfish only lower limits and larger size requirements. What we learn from history is that we never learn anything from history. If you look at the salmon fishery, the technology has skyrocketed reducing the season for comercial fishing to about a week with boats running over each other at the sound of the opening horn. This is not the way it was intended. Comercialization of any specie will eventually allow only the comerical fishermen to catch it. Wether it"Blacken Redfish" on a cooking show or "Bassmasters" holding a tournament, their interest are not for the everyday fisherman who eats what he catches for his family and friends. Sell, sell, and make rules to reduce the publics use of the resouce to their use of the resouce. Always exploiting the resouce as they did with the Red Drum in the Gulf Coast region.

I was interviewed once a few years back at Delta Marine in Empire. I had my limit of Reds and a few flounder. As usual I found the guys polite but I have no idea what they do with the info.

God Bless,

I've been interviewed in the Myrtle Grove boat launch four times in the past three years. I saked what was the purpose of the interview and only received a reasonable answer once. That was; The survey is to establish a base line for comparison to surveys conducted after the Davis Pond Project in comissioned. From waht I've seen with the opening of the siphons in the Myrtle Grove area, I don't expect much better results. I think that the fresh warer diversion project is only part of the solution. What is the Corps of Engineers going to do to rebuld what has been lost? I don't think the massive influs of fresh warer will bring the marsh back, only stop more errosion.

I have been interviewed once at Somme's in Des Allemands and twice at Cochiara's(sp) in Lafitte. I participated and they have always been polite, they were not enforcement agents, I think they were biologists.

I was surveyed a few times. The most interesting time was a woman who collected samples of some part of the fishes ear to determine age and scales from each of the fish. Other times it was a simple count.

I've on been surveyed once and it was right after an all day offshore charter on a hot day and I did not feel like being inconveinced. But I guess it has some purpose, although it wasn't mentioned.

Been interviewed several times and some are the same and some questions different. Is there somewhere they post the info and why are these surveys done?? But they are always polite , helpful and will answer most questions. Sometimes though it does take time and if you've been on the water awhile your ready to go but get caught anyway!!

Upon picking up this morning at Rigolets we had a biologist give us a survey. He was very polite and courteous. He said he wanted to weigh and measure about 30 of our 50 fish and we obliged but when it appeared this was going to take a while he completely understood our position and stopped at about 12 fish or so. He made sure that our answering his questions were completely optional and we obliged the best we could. Is there somewhere we could see the results of all these surveys?

these are what as known as creel surveys. these guys are just trying to do a very difficult job. the information that they glean from us helps all of us. so just be polite, for in each and every case i've entered in they have been very polite. and just for the hell of it let's realize that we are all in this together. ed

Survayed in Venice once, and at the Junction Food Store parking lot where we stopped to get a sandwich (won't do the sandwich thing again, pitiful service), anyway, simple questions but some got personal, such as address and phone number, I elected not to give specific address but gave first name, city and phone number. Had a return call about a week later to inform about the results but I missed the call and never got another one. The guy in Venice was with some biologist group and the lady in St. Bernard was more interested in how much money was brought into SB Parish through sport fishing than the fish, both were extremely nice and polite. Oh.... did get checked at Campos last year at the dock by Wildlife and Fisheries, answered the questions but that was it, stuff like how many trips made in a year, average catch, what kind of fish do we target, real basic stuff. No problem at all with me, but I'll talk fishing with anyone.

We were surveyed out of Laffite a couple of weeks ago. They young lady that did it was very professional about it and asked simple questions that didn't harm or offend anyone. If these biologists approach you with these questions, take a minute of your time and answer the questions. It doesn't hurt anyone but helps many to do this. If we don't take the time to do this, how can limits and regulations be set?

It's not caught unless it's in the boat!!!

The Wildlife and Fisheries, National Marine Fisheries, and other Marine organizations take catch surveys of anglers at the dock.

How do you feel about participating in these surveys? Do they ask too many questions, take too much time, etc., etc.

Any suggestions on how they could improve the process?

I don't do it. Don't be fooled by the polite demeanor of these folks. They're collecting information alright, but if you don't know what the specific purpose of a survey is or exactly who you are giving it to; you could be giving PETA and others like them a boat full of ammo to use against you. I pray that I'm wrong about this but I'm not willing to take the chance. Are you?
Also want to be very careful about the info. you give on the H.I.P. program survey that you are required to fill out before purchasing a hunting license. Ever had a tax reduced ? Ever get increases in fish or game limits? There is a reason for it! The info. which we give these polite folks at the dock is compiled and then used to against us by the political entities that don't care about us! If I could believe 100% that these surveys were good tools for helping conserve fish and game I'd be all for them. But they are insignificant and inconclusive; which makes for bad info.

Checked by them 2x last year. Very nice people, but could use a little knowledge, before going into the field. Also they called my house three times with the same follow up ?'s. This was a little annoying and makes me a little reluctant to cooperate. Also a note to their chain of command, do you feel it is safe to send uniformed people in the field that look like enforcement people with no training or means of defense? That should give your training dir. nightmares. I encorage everyone to participate as knowledge is power.
